Gain a Competitive Edge: Upskilling for Data Scientists

Indian data science professionals are turning to reskilling and upskilling programmes, according to the Emeritus India Impact Survey. Two out of three data science professionals gained a competitive edge over their peers through participating in professional upskilling programmes from Emeritus. The survey shows that 86% of data science professionals saw a positive impact on their jobs from the programmes they were part of within 12 months. The majority of survey respondents belonged to the fields of software and IT services, healthcare, as well as, finance and insurance. Over 60% of the professionals who took up upskilling programmes witnessed a technical improvement organisationally as a result of the insights gathered from data science programmes conducted by industry experts and thought leaders. The upskilling programmes provided necessary skills to data science professionals, such as filling gaps in their job knowledge, providing valuable tools and training that they could immediately apply to their work, and future-proofing their careers. Emeritus CEO Mohan Kannegal commented that upskilling helps not just at an individual level but also at an organizational level. Upskilling Programmes Gave Indian Data Science Professionals Competitive Edge: Emeritus India Impact Survey

According to the Emeritus India Impact Survey released on March 27, 2023, Indian data science professionals are increasingly turning to reskilling and upskilling programmes for new career opportunities. Emeritus, a global leader in professional education, conducted the survey and found that two out of three data science professionals who participated in their upskilling programmes gained an edge over their peers.

The survey showed that 86% of data science professionals saw a positive impact on their jobs within 12 months of participating in the programmes, demonstrating the immediacy of the programme outcomes. Additionally, half of the professionals were able to advance in their current jobs and discover new career opportunities as a result of the programme. The majority of survey respondents worked in the software and IT services, healthcare, finance, and insurance industries.

The ‘State of Data Science & AI Skills in India’ report 2023 published by Nasscom, the apex body for Indian IT industry, found that there is at least a 51% gap between the demand and supply of data science professionals in India working in Artificial Intelligence (AI), Machine Learning (ML), and big data analytics. The Emeritus India Impact Survey results provide an encouraging sign to close this gap as data science professionals who participated in upskilling programmes could also contribute to their organization’s growth. Over 60% of the professionals witnessed technical improvements organizationally as a result of the insights gathered from the programmes, which were conducted by world-renowned industry experts and thought leaders.

The upskilling programmes also imparted necessary skills to data science professionals, such as filling gaps in their job knowledge (61%), providing valuable tools and training that they could immediately apply to their work (63%), and future-proofing their careers (56%). The survey indicates that Indian data science professionals recognize the importance of upskilling and reskilling to gain a competitive edge and advance their careers.

Emeritus CEO Comments on Upskilling Programmes and India Impact Survey

Mr. Mohan Kannegal, CEO, India and APAC, Emeritus, commented on the recently released Emeritus India Impact Survey, stating that there is a huge gap in the number of professionals skilled in data science and analytics, which Emeritus aims to plug through high-quality professional upskilling programmes. The survey, conducted in September 2022 with learners who completed Emeritus professional education programmes through its partner schools before June 2022, shows positive signs that upskilling helps not only at an individual level but also at an organizational level.
