For an annual event celebrating heritage across the province, the Ladysmith and District Historical Society will present a new talk by a Nanaimo author and investigative journalist.
According to a publication, Daryl Ashby, the author of 85 grams: Art Williams – Drug Czar And No-Boy: Ralph Harris, the Northern Connectionwill uncover the lives of a handful of men who constructed the covert pipeline that has been bringing illegal drugs to the region for over 50 years.
As the author says, Art Williams managed to evade conviction until his disappearance in 1977, and Ralph Harris worked under the agency’s radar his entire life. While William’s survival relied on the use of his intelligence, Harris relied on street smarts and brute force.
As a free event, Ashby’s presentation on February 22 at 7:00 p.m. at Ladysmith’s Eagles Hall will include a special guest who will provide “first hand experience” as one of the largest couriers of Central South American cartel drugs.
To continue the celebrations, Heritage Week will host dozens of events across the province between February 20-26, with this year’s theme encouraging communities to explore the heritage that inspires them. According to the organization’s calendar of events, on February 20th there will be a family fun day at Qualicum Beach Museum and a baby lamb farm tour at Ruckle Heritage Farm on Salt Spring Island.
“Heritage Week recognizes that heritage is always with us and in every way strengthens our ability to achieve greater reconciliation, diversity and justice in our communities,” said Kirstin Clausen, executive director of Heritage BC, in a press release.
