Laser-focused on creativity, Glowforge adds AI imaging 1

“Unlocking Creativity: How AI Imaging With Glowforge Is Redefining Laser-Focused Art”

We’ve all had a blast creating game assets, weird selfies, custom stock images, and dodgy files, and it was only a matter of time before one of the big hardware manufacturers jumped on the AI imaging bandwagon. Today, laser cutting and printing company Glowforge is releasing its Magic Canvas feature, allowing even the least artistic of us to create fun and creative artworks optimized for the company’s laser etching machines.

“The magic comes from how we trained and mapped the training data between the text and images, so you’re building things that actually work well with the laser,” Dan Shapiro, CEO and co-founder of Glowforge, said in an interview with TechCrunch when he demonstrated the new Magic Canvas feature.

The company has developed a range of styles (from heroic portraits and pencil drawings to super cute and cartoonish characters). Combine the style with a command prompt and the Glowforge software sends the commands to the cloud where a powerful graphics card generates an image based on the prompt. If the user doesn’t like the image, they can press “Again” to create a new version of the image, or select “Use this image” to push the AI-generated masterpiece to the printer.

“I wish I could draw,” Shapiro laughs. “Magic Canvas doesn’t compare to what a professional artist can do. But my goodness, if it isn’t 1,000 times better than what I could do.”

Glowforge can etch and charge wood, acrylic, fabric, and all sorts of other materials (even chocolate if you like your coconut extra crunchy).

“After years of research, generative AI is finally bearing results. At Glowforge, we help our customers print beautiful, physical products quickly and easily – to bring their ideas to life. We’ve partnered with cutting-edge research in artificial intelligence to find a new way to do it, and today we’re proud to introduce Magic Canvas to the world,” said Shapiro. “It’s already easy to create with your Glowforge, so the last hurdle was the biggest: how to bring your idea to life quickly and without complex tools. We are able to use modern AI technology to provide the solution: a supercomputer in the cloud that creates artworks just for you.”

The company has filed patents related to its Magic Canvas software, and the team has been reluctant to share specific details about what exact latent diffusion neural network it uses to create its AI artworks designed for laser engraving. The new feature is part of the company’s Glowforge Premium subscription for $50 a month (or $600 a year) and Magic Canvas is available on all models starting today.
