Man Arrested for Attempted Murder After Shots Fired in Nanaimo Road Rage Incident
TO UPDATE: Nanaimo RCMP has reported that Reza Rahiman, of Ladysmith, appeared in a provincial court in Nanaimo on Monday February 6 where he was formally charged with attempted murder and firing a firearm with intent to harm or wound himself. He remains in police custody.
POSTED SO FAR: RCMP is holding a suspect in custody for attempted murder after shots were fired into a vehicle at an intersection in Nanaimo last weekend.
According to Nanaimo RCMP, the incident happened around 12:30 p.m. Sunday, February 5, at the intersection of Boxwood and Northfield streets, when two men, one in a Jeep Wrangler and the other in an older model Pontiac Sunfire, exchanged words and the jeep driver fired multiple shots into the car.
The 17-year-old driver of the Pontiac was not hit by any of the bullets fired into his car, and the suspect in the Jeep then sped away.
“He was caught on Cedar Road with the help of Ladysmith RCMP,” said Reservist Const. Gary O’Brien, Nanaimo RCMP Spokesman.
O’Brien said a pistol and two semi-automatic rifles were found in the jeep. The 43-year-old suspect, who resides in Ladysmith, was arrested for attempted murder and remains in custody.
“The guns were confiscated, so they were taken off the streets,” O’Brien said.
The Sunfire was also taken for evidence and police confirmed that it was hit by gunfire several times.
O’Brien said several people witnessed the series of events, which allegedly began as a street riot, but police would like to hear from anyone who may have dashcam video of the incident or the events leading up to it.
“The investigation is ongoing and additional charges are pending,” O’Brien said.
Anyone who has not yet been spoken to by police who witnessed the incident or has video is asked to call the Nanaimo RCMP Department 911 number at 250-754-2345 and quote file #2023-4128.
