Google’s Bard AI: A Game-Changer for Natural Language Processing?
OpenAI’s ChatGPT has taken the world by storm, but it will soon have a formidable rival. Google just announced that its new “experimental conversational AI service” called Bard has now entered testing.
Perfecting this AI model seems to be an absolute priority for Google, and time is running out for that. Luckily for Bard, it will have some edge over this version of ChatGPT.
The era of AI is long behind us, but Microsoft-backed ChatGPT has certainly propelled certain types of AI into mainstream popularity. It has also prompted other companies to start unveiling their own versions of the technology as soon as possible. Enter Bard, Google’s conversational AI that could soon become part of the proprietary search engine.
ChatGPT is not without bugs, but it can compile easy-to-read answers to all kinds of questions. With Microsoft planning to integrate it with Bing, it could become a force to be reckoned with and leave Google fighting for its money for the first time. It’s no wonder Google rushed to prepare Bard, and perhaps because of the tight deadline, it doesn’t say much about the technology in the blog post announcement.
Google’s Bard uses the LaMDA (Language Model for Dialogue Application) AI model, while OpenAI’s ChatGPT is based on GPT-3.5. Google’s advantage over Microsoft is evident here, as Bard has access to up-to-date information, while ChatGPT relies on training that ended in 2021. Microsoft will reportedly use GPT-4 for Bing integration, but that will level the playing field.
Google CEO Sundar Pichai said in the blog post, “Bard seeks to combine the breadth of the world’s knowledge with the power, intelligence and creativity of our large language models. It draws on information from the web to provide up-to-date, high-quality answers.”
The first release of Bard runs on a lightweight version of LaMDA. Google says this will use significantly less processing power, which in turn will allow the technology to be made available to a large group of users. For the time being, Google plans to open Bard to “Trusted Testers”. In the weeks that follow, more and more users get access to Bard for testing purposes. Google has big plans for Bard, and it’s clear that one day it could become part of the search engine we all use today.
“AI can help in those moments by summarizing insights for questions that don’t have a right answer. Soon you’ll see AI-powered features in search distilling complex information and multiple perspectives into easy-to-understand formats so you can quickly see the big picture and learn more from the web: whether that’s searching for additional perspectives, such as blogs by people who play both piano and guitar, or delve deeper into a related topic such as B. Steps to get started as a beginner. These new AI capabilities will be rolling out to Google Search very soon,” Pichai said.
