“Capital’s 2022-23 Trade Targets: The Dynamic Duo of DeBrincat and Panarin”

When I look at some superstars who might be on the move, it’s hard not to think of Ottawa Senators’ Alex DeBrincat. After being acquired by the Chicago Blackhawks in the offseason, he continued to prove why he posed an offensive threat that every team in the league would love to have. This article discusses the possibility of the Washington Capitals taking him on as there seems to be almost no downside to hiring a man of his brand of firepower.

Who is Alex DeBrincat and how does he benefit from the Capitals?

DeBrincat is a 25-year-old right-footed winger from Farmington Hills, Michigan who currently plays for the Senators. He was drafted 39th overall by the Blackhawks in the second round of the 2016 NHL Entry Draft. His rookie season was 2017-18, during which he easily transferred his offensive touch to the NHL, scoring 28 goals and adding 24 assists for 52 points in 82 games. This season with the Senators, he has 17 goals and 24 assists for 41 points in 50 games, good enough for fifth place in the team standings. In a total of 418 games in his career, he has scored 177 goals and added 171 assists for 348 points.

Latest News & Highlights

DeBrincat played his junior career with the Erie Otters of the Ontario Hockey League (OHL) along with several other NHL stars, including Connor McDavid and Dylan Strome. He played three seasons with the Otters, each of which he had at least 100 points. In his debut season, 2014/15, he recorded 51 goals and 53 assists in 68 games. In his sophomore season, he played eight fewer games but still scored 51 goals and added 50 assists. In his senior year as a junior hockey player, he played 63 games, scoring 65 goals and 62 assists. He finished his Erie stint with 332 points in 191 games.

Even when DeBrincat was young, he excelled as an offensive powerhouse. He transitioned his game from the OHL to the NHL with ease and hasn’t slowed down. Putting him alongside Washington’s attacking core forward would make this group one of the most dangerous ever assembled. It would be fun to add a man who can easily score 30 goals with the right system alongside one of the all-time top scorers in Alex Ovechkin.

What would it cost the capitals?

DeBrincat was traded to the Senators ahead of the 2022 NHL Entry Draft in exchange for 7th overall and 39th overall in the 2022 draft and a third-round pick in the 2024 NHL Entry Draft. It’s safe to say that its value hasn’t gone down, so it would still cost a lot to hire a young man who’s nearing his prime. The only benefit the Caps could have is that his contract expires at the end of this season. If the Sens feel like they can’t re-sign him, they could try to move him for whatever they can get.

His $6.4 million cap hit is tough to avoid, but fair value for his skill. He is a pending Restricted Free Agent (RFA) with a qualifying offer of $9 million. For the money to work and keep it realistic, I envision caps Anthony Mantha, Connor McMichael, giving up a second-round pick in 2023 and a seventh-round draft pick in 2023.

The senators would probably have to withhold some salary to make this trade work, but I think the capitals should pull the trigger. If they’re losing bids to upgrade their blue line, there’s no harm in increasing power ahead of time.

I’ve been a writer for a little over a year now and I’m currently still playing junior hockey in Western Canada. I’m a big fan of the Capitals and Oilers and run my own Instagram hockey news page called TheMugNHL.

Writing has become a hobby as I plan to do business at university while still trying to play hockey on the side.
