“Abbotsford Film Society Gives Audiences the Chance to See Parasite, the Oscar-Winning Movie Sensation”
The Abbotsford Film Society (AFS) has selected Oscar-winning Parasite as the third film in its first series.
The film will be screened on Friday February 24th in The Banquet Room at Emmanuel Mennonite Church, 3471 Clearbrook Rd. Admission is at 7:30 p.m., the film starts at 8:00 p.m
The screening fulfills the Society’s mission of showing foreign films of merit. AFS President Aaron Dawson says Parasite is an incredibly well-made film that many probably have heard of but haven’t seen.
“Even after he won an Oscar, he didn’t get very far in the movies,” said Dawson. “I had to drive to Langley to see it and I’m not sure it ever played at Abbotsford.”
The South Korean film won four Oscars in 2019, including Best Picture – the first non-English film to win in that category in Oscars history.

Dawson said for those unfamiliar with Korean or Asian cinema, this is a great “entry film” and resonates with audiences. It’s unique in the way its plot makes it seem like you’re suddenly watching a very different movie.
Parasite is also packed with poignant social commentary, he said.
“Its universal message about haves and have-nots is perhaps even more relevant today than when it was first published,” said Dawson.
Alongside the pre-screening talk, guests can enjoy themed snacks and drinks — and, of course, popcorn. Memberships for the remainder of the season can also be purchased for $25, giving members access to five additional shows including Parasite.
Guests for the screening are asked to enter the parking lot from Clearbrook Road and enter on the right (north) side of the building. Admission is $5 at the door.
