RIO DE JANEIRO — Brazil’s new leader, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, will meet with President Biden on Friday afternoon, then return home the next day.

Officials from both administrations say they are not underestimating the visit because of its brevity — both leaders have ambitious goals, including celebrating democracy and tackling climate change. And they have a lot in common after recent events in both countries.

Just over a month ago, hundreds of supporters of former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro stormed the capital and ransacked Congress, the Supreme Court and presidential offices.

The comparison with the attack on supporters of former President Donald Trump on January 6 is often made. As well as the fact that Trump and Bolsonaro, close allies, continue to spread false allegations of electoral fraud.

Bolsonaro is currently in Florida. He came to the United States just before Lula’s inauguration on New Year’s Day. It is unclear how long he will be away from Brazil, where he is being investigated for his role in last month’s attacks. Lula is unlikely to talk about the former president’s stay in the United States

President Biden has shown his support for Lula as he deals with Bolsonaro and his extremist supporters. Immediately after the January 8 attacks, Biden called Lula and invited him to the White House. He was also one of the first world leaders to congratulate Lula on his narrow election victory last October. Relations between Brazil and the United States have been strained during the last two years of Bolsonaro’s far-right administration.

The visit is an “important step” in restarting US-Brazilian relations, said Thiago de Aragāo, a political risk consultant in Brasilia and Washington. A photo with Biden in the White House is what Lula is looking for at this early stage in his administration, Aragão says, especially when it comes to his role in fighting climate change. “Biden will legitimize Lula as one of the most important thought leaders among global leaders on the environmental agenda,” he said.

Lula has vowed to reverse Bolsonaro’s dire environmental toll, in which much of Brazil’s deforestation enforcement was dismantled. Lula has launched a massive operation to rid the country’s largest indigenous reservation of illegal miners.

Hundreds of federal agents have been sent to the Yanomami reservation in the northern Amazon to root out illegal operations that have polluted local rivers and lands.

Biden had pledged to create a global fund to protect Amazon. Lula is expected to ask the US leader to contribute to the existing Amazon fund, which he revived after his demise under Bolsonaro. The $1.3 billion fund is backed mainly by Norway and Germany and provides money for deforestation prevention and sustainable development projects in the rainforest.

The two leaders do not agree on everything, especially in terms of foreign policy. Lula refrains from condemning Russia in the current war in Ukraine. In fact, the Brazilian leader has offered to lead a so-called “Peace Club” of non-aligned states, including India, to help end the conflict.

Nor does he take aspects within the fresh tensions between america and China. China is Brazil’s biggest buying and selling spouse. It does virtually two times the quantity of business with China than with its 2d spouse, america. Lula has deliberate a shuttle to China upcoming time.
