Rain can be the perfect excuse. Some people think that running in the rain is impossible and prefer to stay indoors, when in fact, running in the rain is safe, provided you do it with caution. If you don’t want the rain to interfere with your exercises or running for the day, be sure to follow these tips (as well as wear proper running clothes).

Avoid cotton clothing

In general, if you are going to run in the rain, make sure you have an outer garment that is waterproof or that does not absorb too much water. Cotton is a bad idea because it is one of the clothes that absorbs the most water, which can make the experience terrible. The clothes are wet and heavy, and you go home in a sea of garbage. On the other hand, wet cotton can cause irritation of the skin by rubbing. Wool can be a good option because it does not give the impression of being cold or too heavy, but waterproofness is essential. A windbreaker can also be perfect.

Check the temperature

Exercising in the rain can be easy, as the body stays warm during physical activity, so it doesn’t really affect it. However, it is necessary to check the temperature because if the water starts to be cold, it may be quite impossible to exercise and you may get sick or worse. As long as the ambient temperature is warm and you don’t end up freezing after your race, everything is fine. The meteorologist is your best friend in those moments, so check before you leave to avoid any problems.

Wear a hat

While a waterproof hoodie can be a great option, it’s not enough to keep water from falling directly onto your face or eyes. A cap is a good additional option to always have a clear path and avoid constantly getting your face wet.

Choose good running shoes

If you have to run in the rain, you need reliable shoes that will not make you slide. Good traction is necessary to always have control of every step and to make sure you don’t fall into a puddle unexpectedly. On the other hand, you can choose waterproof shoes to be sure that you do not damage your shoes, although this is not completely necessary. If water starts getting into your shoes, it can seep into your socks and get in the way, and if it’s cold, you can get sick.

Get to know the terrain

Make sure you know the roads and paths you’re going to run on if you’re exercising in the rain. This helps to avoid falls, falls into puddles created by potholes, etc. Especially if there are descents, try to spot them and slow down to be safe.

Avoid thunderstorms

While a light rain can’t hurt you, a good thunderstorm or lightning storm can be quite dangerous. Again, check the rain forecast and if you see any lightning signs, get home early. If you suspect a thunderstorm, stay close to your home or a place where you can take shelter.

Choose good socks

We have already mentioned that socks can get wet, but to avoid this, in addition to not wearing cotton socks, you can choose socks made of fabrics that do not absorb as much water or that prevent your feet from getting too wet.

Make sure you’re warm when you get home

Once you slow down, your body begins to cool down and if you come into contact with water and cold, you could get sick. Try to find a warm place to change and put on warm clothes to avoid the cold.
