A Notice From Mumbai Police, October 2026

On October 10, 2026, Mumbai police detained the actor Imran Khan at a protest at August Kranti Maidan, where demonstrators were demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. A few days later, according to a report by the news agency IANS, the police served him a notice under Sections 7 and 29 of the Immigration and Foreigners Act asking him to leave India by October 28. The case is registered at Gamdevi police station as FIR 813 of 2026.

The notice rests on the claim that he is not an Indian citizen. Kirit Somaiya, a leader of the Bharatiya Janata Party, wrote to the police on October 13 asking for a Look Out Circular against him, and said Khan is a United States citizen who holds an Overseas Citizenship of India card. As of October 17 the sources consulted for this article reported no court ruling on the notice. The news came nine months after his first film appearance in more than ten years.

Nasir Hussain's Grandson in Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak

Khan grew up inside one of the best-known families in Hindi cinema. He is the grandson of Nasir Hussain, the director, producer and screenwriter, and the nephew of the actor Aamir Khan and the director Mansoor Khan. His first screen roles came as a child, playing the young version of Aamir Khan's characters in Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak in 1988 and Jo Jeeta Wohi Sikandar in 1992.

The New York Film Academy in Los Angeles, 2004

Before he worked as an adult actor, Khan trained in the United States. The New York Film Academy lists him as a graduate of its one-year acting conservatory at the Los Angeles campus in 2004. Outlook Luxe describes the same course as filmmaking study in Los Angeles before his debut.

Jaane Tu... Ya Jaane Na and the Filmfare Debut Award

His adult debut came in 2008 with Jaane Tu... Ya Jaane Na, a romantic comedy directed by Abbas Tyrewala and backed by Aamir Khan. The film was a hit. Outlook Luxe puts its worldwide gross at about Rs 83 crore, and it won Khan the Filmfare Award for Best Male Debut.

A run of studio films followed: Kidnap, Luck, I Hate Luv Storys and Delhi Belly, in which he starred alongside Vir Das. By 2013 he had a place on the Forbes India Celebrity 100 list. Outlook Luxe reports the rank as 40th; the Forbes India pages could not be read for this article, so the figure behind it is not given here.

Katti Batti and the Low of 2016

The later films did less well. After Gori Tere Pyaar Mein and Katti Batti, released in 2015, failed at the box office, Khan stopped taking roles. In a 2024 cover interview with Vogue India, reported by The Quint, he explained the decision in terms of money and his own state of mind: "I hit a low in 2016 where I felt broken inside. Luckily, I was working in an industry that had rewarded me financially, so by the time I was 30, I didn't have to worry about money."

He also said the films had stopped giving him what he wanted from the job: "What I actually wanted was for the films I was in to be successful." He was a new father at the time and decided that acting was no longer the work he wanted.

Mission Mars: Keep Walking India, 2018

During his years away from acting Khan made one film as a director. Gulf News reported in 2018 that he had written and directed Mission Mars: Keep Walking India, a short film about India's Mars Orbiter Mission. It was made for Johnnie Walker with Dharma 2.0 and scheduled for a digital release.

Avantika Malik and the Years Away

Khan married Avantika Malik in January 2011. Their daughter was born in 2014. The couple separated in 2019 and later divorced. In an interview reported by Gulf News, Khan said of the end of the marriage, "I was an absolute wreck." Outlook Luxe reports that he is now in a relationship with the actor and designer Lekha Washington.

Happy Patel and Adhure Hum Adhure Tum

Khan's return to the screen was a cameo in Happy Patel: Khatarnak Jasoos, a spy comedy from his Delhi Belly co-star Vir Das, backed by Aamir Khan Productions and released on January 16, 2026. In a PTI interview carried by Outlook India, he said he had joined because "I was struck with FOMO," and that he was not trying to be "the biggest star or to be in the top three" any more.

His first lead role since 2015 is in Adhure Hum Adhure Tum, a romantic comedy for Netflix directed by Danish Aslam, who directed Break Ke Baad. Bhumi Pednekar and Gurfateh Pirzada co-star. In November 2025 The Hollywood Reporter India reported that shooting was finished, the film was in post-production and the release date was up to the platform. Khan described it to the magazine this way: "The movie is just like what the team of Break Ke Baad would be doing 15 years later in life." Outlook India has since reported that the release faces a delay after the police notice.

No dated estimate of Khan's net worth from Forbes, Bloomberg or a comparable financial publication exists, and the figures that circulate online come from aggregator sites, so this article gives no figure.
