Keely Shaye Smith is an American journalist, television host/correspondent, and author. The multi-talented lady is also a filmmaker, glamour model, and actress. She has had a rich career as a journalist, covering a broad range of issues from most wanted fugitives and celebrity journalism to animal advocacy and environmental journalism. She hosted NBC's primetime show ‘Unsolved Mysteries’ for a few seasons. As an author, Smith has had about six articles published in the Los Angeles Confidential magazine. An avid gardener, she is also writing a book on horticulture and is even trying to develop the book into a weekly television series. Till date, she has reported on everything from biodiversity and toxic waste to organic gardening and children's issues. The award-winning broadcast journalist and filmmaker regularly volunteers her time for various environmental causes such as clean air and clean water campaigns, anti-nuclear campaigns, saving endangered species, marine mammal and wetland protection, and environmental educational in the school for grades K-12. Career
Keely Shaye Smith first worked in a MTV music video titled "Stuck with You.” In 1990, she appeared as Valerie Freeman in the medical drama ‘General Hospital’. She then worked for ABC’s ‘The Home Show’ as an environmental correspondent for six years. From 1994 to 1997, she was a correspondent on NBC's primetime show ‘Unsolved Mysteries’. Smith then went on to serve as an entertainment correspondent for CBS' ‘Entertainment Tonight,’ HBO's ‘World Entertainment Report’ and NBC's ‘Today Show’ as well as a gardening expert for ABC's ‘Mike and Maty’ and ‘Good Morning America.’ Additionally, Smith hosted a series called ‘Great Bears’ for the Outdoor Life Network.
As a TV producer, Smith created and hosted ‘Home Green Home,’ an eco-friendly home and garden show that premiered on PBS. She has also produced and directed the award-winning documentary flick ‘Poisoning Paradise’ that is based on the toxic agricultural environment of Kauai.
As an author, she has contributed to the Los Angeles Confidential Magazine. Currently, she is working on her book titled ‘Gourmet Gardener’ which is slated to release soon.
Social Activism
From 1995 to 2000, Smith and her husband Pierce worked with the International Fund for Animal Welfare and the Natural Resources Defense Council to stop a salt factory from being built at Laguna San Ignacio in Mexico. The couple is also committed to introduce environmental education in the school for grades K-12 and presently sponsors ‘Roots and Shoots’ youth and humanitarian program founded by their longtime friend Jane Goodall.
In 2007, the duo successfully fought the Cabrillo Port Liquefied Natural Gas facility that was proposed to be built off the coast of Oxnard and Malibu. The same year, they donated about $100,000 to help replace a park on the Hawaiian island of Kauai. In the year 2009, Smith and her husband visited the White House to help Congressman Eni Faleomavaega and William Delahunt introduce legislation to shut loopholes on scientific and commercial whaling worldwide. That year, they testified in Washington, D.C., before the Environmental Protection Agency in support of the American Clean Energy and Security Act.
