Whether you’re preparing for a family gathering or a cozy night in, these squares are sure to be a hit!

Ingredients

  • For the Crust:
2 cups graham cracker crumbs, ½ cup unsalted butter (melted), ¼ cup granulated sugar.
  • For the Custard Filling:
2 cups whole milk, ½ cup heavy cream, 1 cup granulated sugar, ½ cup all-purpose flour, 4 large egg yolks, 2 tsp vanilla extract.
  • Powdered sugar, for dusting.

Directions

  1. Prepare the Crust:
Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Line a 9×9-inch baking pan with parchment paper. In a medium bowl, combine the graham cracker crumbs, melted butter, and ¼ cup sugar. Press this mixture into the bottom of the pan. Bake for 10 minutes, then let it cool completely.
  2. Make the Custard Filling:
In a medium saucepan, heat the milk and heavy cream over medium heat until it begins to simmer. In a separate bowl, whisk together the sugar and flour. Gradually add the egg yolks, whisking until smooth. Slowly pour the hot milk mixture into the egg mixture, whisking constantly to prevent curdling. Return the mixture to the saucepan and cook over medium heat, stirring constantly, until it thickens and comes to a boil. Remove from heat and stir in the vanilla extract.
  3. Assemble:
Pour the custard over the cooled crust, spreading it evenly. Refrigerate for at least 4 hours to allow the custard to set.
  4. Serve:
Once set, cut the dessert into squares and dust with powdered sugar.

Pro Tips for Perfect Custard Cream Squares

  • Preventing Curdling: When adding hot milk to the egg mixture, pour slowly and whisk constantly to avoid curdling the eggs.
  • Chill Well: Let the squares chill in the fridge for the full 4 hours to ensure they set properly before serving.
  • Flavor Boost: For extra flavor, add a pinch of salt to the custard mix to enhance the sweetness of the vanilla.
