Is GPT-4 the Future of AI?

OpenAI has released GPT-4, which has shown “sparks” of artificial general intelligence (AGI). However, the researchers are careful to characterize GPT-4’s abilities as “only a first step towards a series of increasingly generally intelligent systems.” While GPT-4 is an improvement over its predecessor, it still makes mistakes, and its overall patterns of intelligence are not human-like. Trust and understanding are essential, along with competence and intelligence, especially in matters of human relationships.

OpenAI has released GPT-4, an AI program that researchers claim shows “sparks” of human intelligence or artificial general intelligence (AGI). However, the researchers are careful to characterize GPT-4’s abilities as “only a first step towards a series of increasingly generally intelligent systems.” They also note that the paper is based on an early version of GPT-4 that was still in active development by OpenAI and not necessarily the version that’s been wrangled into product-applicable formation.

While GPT-4 is an improvement over its predecessor, it’s not perfect and still makes mistakes. The hype surrounding AI like GPT-4 may be somewhat warranted, but the optimism surrounding its capabilities needs to be tempered with caution. Despite this, tech optimists view GPT-4 as a milestone in the journey towards AGI.

However, there are some caveats to the AGI argument. While GPT-4 is at or beyond human-level for many tasks, its overall patterns of intelligence are not human-like. Even when GPT-4 excels, it still doesn’t think exactly like a human.

Gary Smith points out in his piece that the most relevant question is not whether computers satisfy some endlessly debated definition of intelligence, but whether they have the competence to be trusted to perform specific tasks. The answer will sometimes be yes, often no, and never found in conversations with text-generators. Competence and understanding matter just as much if not more than mere “intelligence,” especially in matters of trust and human relationships.

In conclusion, GPT-4 is a step forward in the development of AGI. However, it’s important to note that it’s not yet fully-hatched human-level AI. While it’s competent at many tasks, its patterns of intelligence are not human-like. It’s crucial to remember that trust and understanding matter as much as intelligence, especially when it comes to human relationships.
