Vinod Khosla, a prominent American tech player and venture capitalist, warns that the United States and China could face a “20-Year Tech War” due to each nation’s political systems and tech investor roles. In a special Fireside Chat hosted by APARC’s China Program, Khosla and APARC’s China Policy Fellow Laura Stone will discuss the implications of such a war and its effect on U.S.-China relations. Khosla founded Khosla Ventures, which focuses on impactful technology investments in various sectors, and is a passionate mentor to entrepreneurs. Laura Stone, a member of the US Department of State, is the Inaugural China Policy Fellow for the 2022-2023 academic year at the Walter H. Shorenstein Asia-Pacific Research Center. The Fireside Chat will explore Khosla’s predictions about the U.S.-China tech space and the potential implications of a tech war, as well as its effects on Chinese and U.S. technology firms operating outside their home markets and the resulting effects on technology and foreign policies.

As the founder of Khosla Ventures, Khosla is a fervent advocate for impactful technology investments in software, AI, robotics, 3D printing, healthcare, and other sectors. He is a passionate mentor of entrepreneurs, and he holds a Bachelor of Technology in Electrical Engineering from IIT, New Delhi, a Master’s in Biomedical Engineering from Carnegie Mellon University, and an MBA from the Stanford Graduate School of Business.

Laura Stone, on the other hand, is a member of the US Department of State and currently serves as the Inaugural China Policy Fellow at the Walter H. Shorenstein Asia-Pacific Research Center (Shorenstein APARC). She has held numerous positions within the US government, including Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for India, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Bhutan, and Maldives, Director of the Office of Chinese and Mongolian Affairs, and Director of the Economic Policy Office in the Bureau of East Asia and Pacific Affairs. Her research with the China Program at APARC is focused on contemporary China affairs and U.S.-China policy.

The Fireside Chat will delve into Khosla’s predictions about the U.S.-China tech space in the short- and long-term, as well as the potential implications of a tech war. Additionally, the conversation will cover what this could mean for Chinese and U.S. technology firms operating outside of their home markets and the resulting effects on technology and foreign policies.
