Gordon Moore: Intel Innovator & Moore's Law Creator

Gordon Moore, the co-founder of Intel and creator of Moore’s Law, passed away at the age of 94 in 2023. He was also known for his philanthropic work, particularly in environmental conservation, science, and patient care improvements. Moore’s prediction that the number of transistors on an integrated circuit would double every year paved the way for the widespread use of chips in everyday products. Moore received numerous honors during his life, including the National Medal of Technology and the Presidential Medal of Freedom. Intel renamed their Ronler Acres campus to Gordon Moore Park at Ronler Acres in honor of his contributions to the industry.

Moore founded Intel along with his longtime colleague Robert Noyce in July 1968. Prior to Intel, Moore and Noyce played important roles in the first commercial production of diffused silicon transistors and later the world’s first commercially viable integrated circuits at Fairchild Semiconductor. Moore initially served as executive vice president at Intel until 1975 when he became the president. In 1979, he was appointed chairman of the board and chief executive officer, posts he held until 1987, when he resigned as CEO but continued as chairman. Moore stepped down as chairman emeritus in 2006.

Philanthropic Work of Gordon Moore

Apart from his contribution to the technology industry, Moore was also dedicated to philanthropy, with a focus on environmental conservation, science, and patient care improvements. He and his wife established the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation in 2000, which has donated more than $5.1 billion to charitable causes to date. Harvey Fineberg, the foundation president, described Moore as “wise, humble, and generous,” and said he had inspired those who had met and worked with him.

Moore’s Law and its Impact

Moore’s Law refers to the prediction that the number of transistors on an integrated circuit (IC) would double every year, which he made in 1965. This prediction was proven correct, and in 1975, Moore revised his estimate to the doubling of transistors on an integrated circuit every two years for the next 10 years. Moore’s Law has played a significant role in the development of the technology industry, inspiring technologists and entrepreneurs across the decades. Intel CEO Pat Gelsinger acknowledged Moore’s instrumental role in revealing the power of transistors and reaffirmed Intel’s commitment to pursuing Moore’s Law until the periodic table is exhausted.

Gordon Moore’s contributions to the technology industry and philanthropy have made a significant impact on the world. His legacy will continue to inspire future generations of technologists and philanthropists.

Gordon Moore’s Legacy Continues to Impact the Semiconductor Industry

Gordon Moore’s prediction that chip technology would grow at an exponential rate, making electronics faster, smaller, and cheaper, has become the driving force behind the semiconductor industry. The Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation stated that this idea paved the way for the widespread use of chips in everyday products. Moore received numerous honors during his life, including the National Medal of Technology and the Presidential Medal of Freedom. He passed away peacefully at his home in Hawaii in 2023, leaving behind his wife and two sons. In honor of his contributions to the industry, Intel renamed their Ronler Acres campus to Gordon Moore Park at Ronler Acres.
