Dyson's Air Quality Backpack Empowers Students in Milan

Dyson’s Air Quality Backpack is being used to track air pollution levels in Lombardy as part of the “Science of Air” campaign. Nine students from Milanese institutes will wear the backpack for two weeks to collect air quality data while they travel. The data collected will be analyzed at Dyson Research and Development laboratories in the UK. The aim is to empower children and make them true air quality scientists, raise community awareness, and collect valuable data to help tackle air pollution within the city. The educational campaign is part of the “Air Science” project, which aims to promote and implement the best educational projects in schools to address the air pollution levels in Milan and the surrounding areas. The project is supported by the James Dyson Foundation and includes more than 350 categories and activities both inside and outside of schools throughout Lombardy for the academic year 2022-2023.

The “Science of Air” Campaign Continues in Lombardy

The “Science of Air” campaign, a project aimed at promoting scientific curiosity in children, raising awareness among the community and informing government policies to address air pollution, is currently ongoing in Lombardy. Dyson, a company that has taken an engineering and scientific approach to this issue, is taking part in the campaign. This educational project, supported by the James Dyson Foundation, will involve more than 350 categories and activities both inside and outside of schools throughout Lombardy for the academic year 2022-2023. It will impact over 8,500 male and female students between 9 and 14 years old.

As part of the campaign, nine students from Milanese institutes will wear Dyson backpacks equipped with a battery, GPS, and sensors capable of detecting pollutants. These backpacks will monitor the students’ exposure to air pollution on their way to and from school for two weeks. Additionally, there will be educational activities and workshops scheduled both during and outside of school hours, including two extra-coefficient days on April 19th and 20th. The two institutes participating in these activities are Luigi Cadorna Primary School and Ilaria Alpi High School – Headquarters in San Colombano.

Furthermore, the campaign is part of the “Air Science” project, which is intended to promote and implement the best educational projects in schools, as well as the green community of the school renovation plan promoted by the Ministry of Education. The project’s ultimate goal is to address the air pollution levels in Milan and the surrounding areas.

Recent data has shown that 9 out of 10 people globally breathe air that exceeds pollution limits set by the World Health Organization (WHO). By involving children in scientific projects like the “Science of Air” campaign, the hope is that future generations will be better equipped to understand and tackle the issue of air pollution. The second phase of the campaign involves a pioneering study that measures the exposure of 9 children from Milanese Institutes to air pollution during their trips to and from school using the Dyson Air Quality Monitor Backpack.

Overall, the “Science of Air” campaign and the Dyson backpacks have the potential to provide valuable data on air pollution exposure in Milanese schools and promote awareness and education on this critical issue.

Dyson Air Quality Backpack: A Tool for Children to Learn and Tackle Air Pollution

The Dyson Air Quality Backpack is a portable air sensor that collects air pollution data in real-time and on the go. Using sensors, battery, and GPS, the backpack can intercept PM2.5 and PM10, volatile organic compounds (VOC), nitrogen dioxide (NO2), and carbon dioxide (CO2). The backpack is a reworked version of the technology used in Dyson air purifiers.

The campaign recognizes the importance of air pollution education and its role in creating eco-citizens. The younger generation must learn to respect the environment in which they live as a natural perspective in their daily behavior. The Dyson Air Quality Backpack provides the opportunity for students to learn in-depth about their exposure to pollutants and design and build straightforward practical solutions that are useful to deal with, favoring an engineering and scientific approach.

The campaign has received positive feedback from teachers and students alike. The material provided as part of the project is based on hands-on learning and experimentation, in line with Montessori education and pedagogy, helping classes to relate theory learned in class to problems and solutions in the real world.

Overall, the Dyson Air Quality Backpack is a valuable tool for children to learn about air pollution and to take an active role in tackling the issue. By involving the younger generation in scientific projects like this, we hope to create a more informed and empowered citizenry capable of addressing air pollution issues in the present and future.

Dyson’s Air Quality Backpack: Empowering Students to Tackle Air Pollution

According to Anna Chiara Bibitone, a teacher at the Dolci Dell complex Luigi Cadorna Comprehensive Institute in Milan, the Dyson Air Quality Backpack project empowers students to take action against air pollution. By participating in the air quality survey, students become more aware of the issue and work on developing entrepreneurial skills, critical thinking, and a spirit of collaboration. The project is aligned with the goals of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and officially enters into the green community of the school renovation plan promoted by the Ministry of Education.

Through initiatives like this, the younger generation can be informed, educated, and inspired to protect the environment and develop technologies for a sustainable future. The Dyson Air Quality Backpack is an innovative tool that collects real-time air pollution data and helps students to better understand their exposure to pollutants. By involving children in scientific projects like this, the hope is that future generations will be better equipped to tackle the issue of air pollution.
