2023 Census Goes Digital: Enhancing Data Accuracy

The Director-General of the National Orientation Agency, Dr. Garba Abari, has announced that technology will be used to collect data on citizens during the 2023 National Population and Housing Census in Nigeria. This year’s Census will be digital, and the National Population Commission has captured digitally 99% of all houses and structures within Nigeria’s territory, far beyond what Google had done in mapping. Dr. Abari stated that digitalization would enhance the credibility of the exercise, with a common template for the exercise that will be sent to the cloud, bringing in a credible, acceptable, open, and transparent force. The preparations for the 2023 census are in high gear, and the exercise is expected to capture data on citizens with specificity and correctness. The previous census exercise was viewed through the prism of one region being larger than the other, which resulted in the most crucial element of the programme, getting sufficient data for planning, being missed. The forthcoming census would be scientific, a digital census that would respond to the reality of today, the information and technological revolution.
