Roger Allen Francois Jouret, better known as Plastic Bertrand, was born on 24 February 1954 in Brussels, Belgium. His father was French while his mother was an Ukrainian.
Bertrand was a music enthusiast right from the time he was a child and he formed the band ‘Buffalo Scouts Band’ along with his friends from the Boy Scouts when he was only nine years old. Subsequently, he became a founding member of the band, The Pelican, which used to perform at bars and festivals.
After completing his degree in music theory at the Music Academy at the Athenee Adolphe Sax, Bertrand went to the Royal Conservatory of Music in 1973 in order to further enrich his knowledge in music. The following year he established the band, Hubble Bubble, and performed for the band plenty of times as it became quite popular.
Bertrand’s biggest break came in 1977 when he commenced his career as a solo artist with the iconic song ‘Ca Plane pour moi’ and he was credited with the song in spite of the fact that it was Lou Deprijck who actually sung it. It led to music tours of the United States, Japan and Australia as Bertrand became a rarity among musicians; a French-speaking musician with an international appeal.
Plastic Bertrand emerged as the singer, writer and drum player for his band Hubble Bubble and in 1978 the band released their first album which was titled ‘Hubble Bubble’. However, the band did not stay together for long as the band members decided to go on their separate ways following the death of the bass guitarist in an accident.
Following his success as solo artist, Plastic Bertrand’s popularity soared and he appeared on several popular television programmes like ‘Jackpot’, ‘Supercool’ and ‘Destination Noel’ on French television. He also produced three albums in his name but it was Lou Deprijck who lent his voice to the entire offering of songs.
Bertrand moved to Milan in Italy in 1982 and lived there for three years. During his stay in Milan, he collaborated with Daniel Balavoine as well as Anni-Frid Lyngstad of the famous band ABBA to produce the song ‘Abbacadabra’. Subsequently, he appeared in the film ‘Legitime Violence’ and also composed the musical score for ‘Asterix Versus Caesar’.
In 1994, Plastic Bertrand released his album titled ‘Diagonal’ in collaboration with Jacques Lanzmann, and the well-known music label Sony produced the album. Subsequently, Bertrand formed MMD, a company for producing music albums and produced a wide variety of music ranging from music inspired by Turkish contemporary and Balkan music.
Plastic Bertrand has had a glittering international career. His most important work is considered to be his hit single "Ça plane pour moi", though, in 2010, it was revealed that the song was sung by Lou Deprijck. The song has also been used by Coca Cola Asia and Pepsi Cola America for their advertising campaign.
