Morgana McNelis was born on July 9, 1983 in Georgia, United States. She has a sister named Marina Milori. She had developed a longstanding appreciation for jewelry since an early age and fell in love with jewelry crafting after attending her first jewelry class at the age of 20, during which she learned lost wax metal casting. She soon started practicing as an apprentice to a master jeweler and metal-smith who taught her "everything one would learn at lapidary school", including classical fine jewelry crafting techniques. She also took courses on art, fashion and business. According to her, learning her craft outside structured school setting helped her think and design "outside the box".

Her relationship with Charlie Hunnam was revealed in 2014, almost a decade after they first met back in 2005. The news that one of the most eligible bachelors in the entertainment industry had been in a long-term relationship away from the press coverage immediately created a media sensation. Together with her partner, she owns a ranch in California, away from Hollywood, where they try to live sustainably in a big organic garden. For the macabre, neo-gothic collection, she drew inspiration from her namesake and legendary sorceress of Arthurian legend, Morgana La Fey, to Francis Ford Coppola's 'Dracula'. She was also deeply influenced by the aesthetics of The Ottoman Empire and Ancient Egypt, as well as designers like Riccardo Tisci and Alexander McQueen. She soon caught the attention of Hollywood after items from her collection made their ways into her boyfriend Charlie Hunnam's FX series, 'Sons of Anarchy'.
