Personal Life

Julia started her YouTube channel ‘Julia Gilman - BeautyTakeIn’ in July 2011 and posted her first video entitled ‘My Curling Secret’ on July 1. All her initial videos like ‘How To Get Ready For Prom’ and ‘Huge Summertime Haul’ were beauty tutorials or back to school videos. Her fresh style of presenting the videos endeared her to many and helped her gain subscribers quickly. One of the first videos that really brought the young YouTuber to the forefront was a makeup tutorial entitled ‘Katy Perry – Wide Awake Official Music Video Inspired Makeup’. The video received over 100k views and it became quite clear that she had a knack for doing beauty vlogs.

YouTube Beginnings

Gilman’s channel really started getting popular in 2013. Videos like ‘Get Ready With Me: First Day Of School!’ and ‘5 Heatless Hairstyles for School! (Easy, Simple, Quick, & Unique)’ gained more than 350k views each and this transformed into more subscribers. However, at the beginning of 2013, she stopped posting videos suddenly because of severe sickness. Around the same time, she also started a vlogging channel which she later deleted. On May 20, 2014, she achieved the distinction of her first one million views on a single video with ‘How To: Get a Bikini Body for Lazy People!’.

However, as her popularity grew, the pressure of maintaining appearances started to take a toll on her. She was already suffering from an eating disorder and didn’t feel like she was happy with her physical appearance. She stopped posting videos regularly and went into depression. Finally, in March 2015, she explained in the video ‘How To Find Real Happiness’, that she was fighting, recovering, and starting to enjoy life more. The positive attitude clearly reflected in her work and she started posting more skits and funny videos on her channel. Her comedic sketch ‘Weird Things Girls Do’ received more than 6 million views. Subsequently, it was followed by almost equally successful content like ‘How To Fall Asleep Fast’ and ‘Weird Things Guys Do’.

By the end of December 2015, she had once again relapsed into her depression. At the beginning of 2016, in her video ‘I’ve Been Lying’, she admitted that her eating disorder, drinking habits and wanting to be thin were the main reasons for her relapse. However, she was able to face it with the help of her friends and family and started to eat healthier. This was reflected in her content as well.
