Barry Scheck was born as Barry Charles Scheck on September 19, 1949 in Queens, New York, USA. He graduated from Horace Mann School in 1967. After this, in 1971 he received his B.A. degree from Yale University, majoring in American Studies and economics. Later on, he received his Master of City Planning (M.C.P.) as well as Juris Doctor (J.D.) degrees from the University of California, Berkeley.
Talking about the Attorney’s love life, he is married to Dorothy Rick. The couple has a daughter, Olivia Morgan Scheck who is an actress.
After completing his legal education, Barry Scheck spent five years in the Bronx, where he served as a Legal Aid Society attorney. He received a big break when he was given a clinical law professor position at the New York’s Cardozo School of Law. This position also allowed him enough freedom to pursue what was important to him.
In 1987, Scheck served as the lawyer for the famous Hedda Nussbaum case. The attorney defended her as well as assisted in getting the charges against her dropped. He also ensured Joel Steinberg's arrest in the case ‘Nussbaum vs. Steinberg’. After becoming a part of the O. J. Simpson defense team and defending him in the 1995 trail, Scheck went on to become the lead lawyer in the British au pair Louise Woodward case and defender her in the murder trial.
He was also responsible for clearing John Kogut, Dennis Halstead, and John Restivo who were charged of rape and murder of Theresa Fusco in 1985. Scheck proved them innocent after the DNA reports came negative.
Scheck served as the president of the National Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers from 2004–05. Today, he is a professor at Benjamin N. Cardozo School of Law. He is also the director at Center for the Study of Law & Ethics as well as of Clinical Education for the Trial Advocacy Program.
In 1992, Barry Scheck and his law partner Peter Neufeld co-founded the Innocence Project. The Project is basically a non-profit foundation that is dedicated to the use of DNA evidence as a means to free individuals of criminal charges for which they were wrongfully convicted. Till date, 343 wrongful convictions have been successfully overturned by the Innocence Project.
