Audra Lindley

Audra Marie Lindley was born on 24th September 1918, in Los Angeles California into a show business family. Her father Bert Lindley was an actor who mostly played small roles.

She married Hardy Ulm in 1943. The couple had five children. After their divorce, she was married to James Whitmore from 1972 to 1979. She passed away in October 1997 at the Cedars Sinai Medical Center; she was suffering from leukemia.

Audra Lindley made her entry into Hollywood with the help of her father. She mostly worked as a stand-in, and also did stunt work. She also started working in Broadway theatre during her mid-20s. The many plays she worked in include ‘On Golden Pond’, ‘Playhouse 70’, ‘Long Day Journey’s into Night’, and ‘Horse Heavens’.

Though she took a break from acting in order to raise her children, she later started appearing on TV again from the early 1960s. She became known for her supporting role in the soap opera ‘Search for Tomorrow’. The show was a huge success, winning three Emmy Awards and three Writers Guild of America Awards. She was also seen in the soap opera ‘Another World’, where she played the role of a manipulative woman, ‘Aunt Liz’. She played a recurring role in the comedy TV series ‘Bridget Loves Bernie’. She was seen in an important role in the TV series ‘Fay’ as well.

In 1971, she was seen in an important role in the American movie ‘Taking Off’. The film, which was directed by Milos Forman, was about a couple in New York whose teenage daughter runs away. This makes them link up with other parents whose children have disappeared as well. The film won the Grand Prix Award at the Cannes Film Festival.

Her most significant role was her portrayal of Helen Roper in the hit TV comedy series ‘Three’s Company’. Her role of a sexually frustrated woman was quite appreciated. The series earned a lot of popularity and aired from 1977 to 1984, covering eight seasons.

Audra Lindley played an important role in the 1980 sci-fi TV film ‘Revenge of the Stepford Wives’. Directed by Robert Fuest, the story was inspired by the novel ‘The Stepford Wives’ by Ira Lenin. The film earned a nomination for the ‘Edgar Allen Poe’ Award. She next played a significant role in the comedy drama film ‘Cannery Row’. It was directed by David S Ward. The film has been adapted from the novels ‘Cannery Row’ and ‘Sweet Thursday’.
