14 RIT Researchers Join Millionaires

Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT) recently recognized its distinguished faculty researchers through its annual PI Reception, which was held virtually in light of the pandemic. The event acknowledged the PI Millionaires from 2019 to 2021 and also recognized two new CAREER award recipients. RIT has 341 principal investigators and researchers with active projects that contribute to the university’s economic growth, particularly in areas such as nanotechnology, optics and imaging science, cybersecurity, and artificial intelligence. Many of these projects have been funded by national agencies such as the National Science Foundation, the Department of Defense, National Institutes of Health, NASA, and the Department of Energy. RIT’s faculty members have received 16 CAREER awards since 2014, reflecting their contributions to various areas of research, including advanced computer memory and devices and connected vehicle security.

Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT) held a reception on March 21 to honor the faculty members who served as principal investigators in research projects and helped the university receive more than $92 million in funding. The 14 faculty members who were inducted into the PI Millionaires cohort, which consists of individuals who received $1 million or more in funding during the fiscal year, were recognized for their outstanding contributions to research in areas such as biomedical devices, cybersecurity, and semiconductor technologies. RIT has 53 active research projects with funding exceeding $1 million.

Ryne Raffaelle, the Vice President for Research and Associate Provost, congratulated the honorees and recognized their impressive achievements, which set an institutional record for the number of proposals submitted. The university is on track to have one of its best years in history, indicating a bright future.

The 14 honorees come from various departments across the university, including the Golisano College of Computing and Information Sciences, College of Science, Saunders College of Business, National Technical Institute for the Deaf, and Kate Gleason College of Engineering. They are Vinay Abhyankar, Travis Desell, Gabriel Diaz, Clyde Eirikur Hull, Stephen Jacobs, Karin Wuertz-Kozak, Dina Newman, Kai Ni, Richard O’Shaughnessy, Thomastine Sarchet, Joha Shamsujjoha, and Mark Smith.

These awards recognize the faculty members’ outstanding contributions to research, which have helped RIT emerge as one of the top private research universities in the United States.
