Innovative Science Competition for Calvert County Students

Calvert County Public Schools recently participated in the Maryland Mathematics, Engineering, and Science Achievement (MESA) program, which aims to provide students with opportunities to develop their academic and leadership skills through various categories of competition. The competition featured categories such as Mobile App, Wearable Technology, Storybook Theme Park, Expanding Structure, and National Engineering Design Challenge. The Regional MESA Showcase and Awards Ceremony was held on March 23, 2023, at Huntingtown High School, where students showcased their projects, listened to guest speakers, and celebrated the winners. First-place winners will advance to the State MESA Day Competition and Showcase on May 13, 2023, at the John Hopkins Applied Physics Lab. Northern High School’s Ahnaf Anowar, Dennis Lin, and Nathan Mehls took second place in the High School Level Mobile App Challenge, while Calvert High School’s Aidan McDowell, Caleb Morgan, and Charlie Zegalia placed third.

In the Elementary School Level Mobile App Challenge, St. Leonard Elementary School took first place with their team of Bryson Bauer, Evan Cherry, Wyatt Ker, Juniper Testa, and Nameary Wilkins. Huntingtown Elementary School placed second, and Barstow Elementary School placed third. Meanwhile, in the Wearable Technology Challenge, Calvert Middle School took first place, and Plum Point Middle School and Calvert Country Public School took second and third place, respectively.

Overall, the MESA program is an excellent opportunity for students to showcase their talents and innovative solutions. Recently, 10 Calvert County Public Schools (CCPS) participated in the program, forming teams of elementary, middle, and high school students. The competition featured categories such as Mobile App, Wearable Technology, Storybook Theme Park, Expanding Structure, and National Engineering Design Challenge – Operation Space.

The Regional MESA Showcase and Awards Ceremony was held on March 23, 2023, at Huntingtown High School. During the event, students showcased their projects, listened to guest speakers, and celebrated the Regional MESA challenge winners.

In the Elementary School Level Mobile App Challenge, St. Leonard Elementary School took first place with their team of Payton Brickner-Davis, Nicholas Lipscomb, Gage Patterson, and Amelia Tryon. Huntingtown Elementary School placed second, and Barstow Elementary School placed third. In the Expanding Structure Challenge – Operation Space, Barstow Elementary School took first place, while St. Leonard Elementary School placed second and Huntingtown Elementary School placed third. Meanwhile, St. Leonard Elementary School took first place in the Storybook Theme Park Ride Challenge, while Barstow Elementary School and Huntingtown Elementary School placed second and third, respectively.

At the Middle School Level, Windy Hill Middle School took first place in the Mobile App Challenge with their team of Andrew Droneburger, André Garcia, Emmitt MacDonald, and Luke Gladfelter. In the Wearable Technology Challenge, Southern Middle School took first place, while Windy Hill Middle School took second place. Northern Middle School took first place in the Expanding Structure Challenge – Operation Space, and Southern Middle School won the National Engineering Design Competition.

In the High School Level, Northern High School took first place in the Mobile App Challenge with their team of Mao Yu Cheng and Oliver Diamond. In the Wearable Technology Challenge, Northern High School and Patuxent High School took first and second place, respectively. Patuxent High School took first place in the Expanding Structure Challenge – Operation Space, and Patuxent High School also won the National Engineering Design Competition.
