CZ Biohub Chicago to Study Inflammation in Human Diseases

The Chan Zuckerberg Initiative, a research venture backed by Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg and wife Dr. Priscilla Chan, is opening its first location outside San Francisco in Fulton Market, Chicago. Called CZ Biohub Chicago, the research center will bring together researchers from the University of Chicago, Northwestern University, and the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign to study inflammation in human tissue and its role in diseases. The initiative has leased almost 26,000 square feet at 1375 W. Fulton St. and is expected to occupy the space this spring.

The CZ Biohub Chicago’s mission is to solve medical challenges on a 10- to 15-year time frame by convening researchers. The research institute will embed miniaturized sensors into tissues to understand how healthy and diseased tissues function in unprecedented detail. CZ Biohub aims to achieve huge progress in the next 10 years, according to Dr. Priscilla Chan.

The Chicago location will be led by Shana Kelley, a professor of chemistry and biomedical engineering at Northwestern University. CZ Biohub Chicago will receive $25 million in capital funds from the state of Illinois, authorized by Gov. J.B. Pritzker, who is also a major investor in tech companies.

Around 30 to 50 people are expected to work at the Chicago site. Pete Farley, a spokesman for the initiative, declined to say how many more centers it plans to build but estimated several more in a few years.

The long-term lease brings the 300,000-square-foot Fulton building to about 85% occupancy, further certifying the Fulton Market office and residential district as a draw for tech-centered operations. Since Google opened in the area in 2015, Fulton Market has become one of the busiest downtown development areas in the country.
