What to see the week of February 20th 1

With so many different streaming platforms and cable offerings to navigate, choosing what to watch has never been more difficult. To make it easier, here are our top tuning-in tips for the week ahead.

WEDNESDAY

Murdaugh Murders: A Southern Scandal

In a relatively slow week for Netflix, this true crime documentary is probably the highlight. It follows one of South Carolina’s most prominent families and how the boating death of a teenager begins to unravel her legacy. The death of Mallory Beach is followed by the murders of Paul Murdaugh (the boat’s driver) and his mother Maggie, leading to a cover-up plot you have to see to believe.

Netflix

The Challenge: Ride or Die – Reunion Pt. 1

Longtime fans of Johnny “Bananas” Devenanzio, still reeling from his defeat in last week’s The Challenge: Ride or Dies finale, are getting another chance to see the biggest challenger on Wednesday’s reunion show . For those unfamiliar with one of the longest-running reality programs, The Challenge features earlier Real World and Are You The One?. Actors and stars from international reality programs compete against each other in death-defying competitions. Winners will receive $1 million.

8 p.m., MTV Canada

THURSDAY

Grey’s anatomy

It might be the winter premiere of Grey’s Anatomy, but it’s also Meredith Grey’s last day at Gray Sloan Memorial Hospital. Ellen Pompeo, one of the few remaining original cast members, is leaving the series for good. Can Grey’s continue without its titular character, or is this a harbinger of its final chapter? Pompeo will return for at least one more episode (the season finale) and will continue to narrate the series despite not starring in it. In her penultimate episode, the other doctors plan a surprise party for the outgoing Meredith, and there Nick (Scott Speedman) questions the future of their relationship (a bit late for that, don’t you think?).

9 p.m., CTV & CTV.ca

FRIDAY

The Reluctant Traveler

Pick of the Week is a new project from Emmy Award winner Eugene Levy. The former Schitt’s Creek star hosts a series in which he adventures around the world while trying to absorb and appreciate the cultures around him. Visiting destinations in Costa Rica, Finland, Italy, Japan, the Maldives, Portugal, South Africa and the USA, he proves he’s anything but your average thrill-seeker.

The consultant

Christoph Waltz plays Regus Patoff in this dark Amazon comedy about a consultant hired to improve the operations of an app-based gaming company. Described as the scariest boss ever, Patoff drives a work-first agenda and takes over after the previous CEO’s death. It was later revealed that Patoff’s last employer was run by a CEO who died two weeks after Patoff was hired.

Prime video

die hard

Kevin Hart plays a fictionalized version of himself in this new film about the actor’s desire to stop being typified as a comedian and be taken seriously as an action star. John Travolta plays Ron Wilcox, the leader of an “action hero school” that Hart enrolls in to learn what it takes to reinvent himself. This movie was originally written as a 10-episode project for Quibi before the short-form streaming service broke and Roku acquired its assets.

Prime video

liaison

This six-episode thriller explores how mistakes of the past still have the power to shatter our future. The complex storyline stars Eva Green as Alison Rowdy, a British MI5 agent who has a history with Gabriel Delage (Vincent Cassel), a French mercenary with ties to MI6.

DO NOT MISS

sharper

This Apple original debuted last week and is based on the theme of never judging a book by its cover. The main characters, Tom (Justice Smith) and Sandra (Brianna Middleton), both believe they have found their soulmate after meeting in a bookstore. However, their budding romance is cut short when a stranger knocking on her door forces Sandra to admit her brother’s many debts. The result is a multi-layered storyline in which everything appears as a facade for something else. If you were a fan of “Kaleidoscope” on Netflix, you might also like that each chapter of this movie starts at a different point in the story. Other leading roles are played by Julianne Moore, Sebastian Stan and John Lithgow.
