Translating Creativity: Insights from 12th International Conference 1

The Translation and Interpreting Institute (TII), part of Hamad Bin Khalifa University’s College of Humanities and Social Sciences (CHSS), has concluded its 12th International Translation Conference. The event, held at the Qatar National Conference Centre, focused on the intersections between translation and creativity and attracted 180 local and international participants. The conference featured a variety of talks on creativity, including specialists in audiovisual, literary, media, machine translation, and interpreting fields. The event’s itinerary also included academic panels, professional workshops, and a showing of The Translator, a 2020 film. The event was co-sponsored by the Qatar National Research Fund as part of their commitment to foster original research in the humanities and other fields. HBKU’s CHSS offers postgraduate programs, language programs, professional development workshops, and professional translation and interpreting services of the highest standard. The Qatar Research, Development, and Innovation Council (QRDC/QNRF) co-sponsored the conference, with Dr. Hatem Mheni expressing his pleasure in bringing together experts to discuss creativity-related topics.

The Translation and Interpreting Institute (TII) of Hamad Bin Khalifa University’s College of Humanities and Social Sciences (CHSS) has successfully concluded its 12th International Translation Conference. The conference, which was held on March 16, 2023, at the Qatar National Conference Centre, was organized as part of TII’s 10th anniversary and focused on the theme of “Translation and Creativity: An Interdisciplinary Encounter.”

The two-day event attracted 180 participants, including local and international experts, speakers, and guests from 19 countries. The conference’s main focus was on the intersections between translation and creativity, and how these fields are evolving across different parts of the world through technological advances, copyright policies, and political forms.

The conference featured a diverse range of talks on creativity from specialists in audiovisual, literary, media, machine translation, and interpreting fields. The schedule also included academic panels, professional workshops, and a screening of The Translator, a 2020 film that tells the story of a translator who returns to Syria after his brother’s capture by the Assad government. Following the screening, Dr. Rana Kazkaz, one of the film’s directors and an Assistant Professor at Northwestern Qatar, led a Q&A session.

Dr. Amal Al-Malki, the Founding Dean of HBKU’s CHSS, expressed her pride in hosting the event and said that the conference was particularly poignant as TII has consistently responded to emerging trends and technological advances in translation studies. The Qatar National Research Fund co-sponsored the event as part of their commitment to promoting original research in the humanities and other fields, in line with the country’s research priorities.

Overall, the 12th International Translation Conference was a successful platform for scholars and career professionals in the translation and interpreting field to delve into contemporary topics at the theoretical and practical level, reinforcing TII’s place at the forefront of translation studies globally.
