The theatrical comedy returns to the stage of the Qathet region in March 1

WeedLube… a slippery slope will be back at the Forest Bistro and Lounge next month by popular demand.

Written by Stephanie Miller, Stephen Miller and Barb Oliver, the beautifully lit and directed 2020 original motion picture comedy explores age-old themes as well as very modern themes such as the legalization of cannabis in Canada. The play took two and a half years to write primarily via Zoom.

“The idea came from a personal story we heard from a friend,” Stephen said. “We took that seed of an idea and came up with something that would be a lot of fun, but at the same time we wanted to expand it into something more meaningful.”

The comedy playfully delves into themes of transition, intertwining the transition women go through during menopause and the transition of marijuana from illegal to a legally bought and sold substance in Canada.

“You know comedy is deadly serious when you examine it closely,” Stephanie said. “What better way to explore more complicated subjects than through comedy while laughing at yourself.”

The set is intimate, the actors professional, and the show itself “reminiscent of a 1980s TV show, Laverne and Shirley‘ said Stephen. “Some of the listeners want comedy, but others listen to the other part about menopause and focus on that.”

Stephanie added that menopause affects everyone.

“Some people will stop us on the street and say, ‘I’m going through all this,’” said Stephanie, who thinks there’s a lot of shame going on on the subject.

“Why not talk about it in a way that uncovers something that’s usually shrouded in mystery, but in a fun way,” she added.

last october, WeedLube played to a full house every night.

“When you write comedy, you always ask yourself if the audience will find it funny,” Stephen explained. “We didn’t know if anyone would laugh; That is our greatest fear.”

At that time, people were still in the process of not going out because of COVID-19 and longing to be with others in public.

“It was so nice to actually have this community event, a community experience,” Stephanie said. “The audience is so much a part of the play and performing it in front of a live audience for the first time has been a wonderful journey.”

The two main characters, played by Barb Oliver and Stephanie, are caught between the changes of menopause and the legalization of cannabis.

“It was fun for us to explore, transition times are a strange time,” Stephanie said.

Another issue the audience grappled with was the idea that society is fairly age-appropriate as it ages.

“There’s this transition that’s so nuanced that one day you suddenly say to yourself, ‘I’m invisible,’” Stephanie said. “This is another theme we tried to weave into the story.”

Although the issues are serious, the Millers aim to make audiences laugh.

“The whole evening is entertainment, tapas and spectacle,” emphasizes Stephanie.

WeedLube… a slippery slope runs March 2-4 at 7 p.m. Tickets are available at the Forest Bistro and Base Camp.
