One person was killed and others injured after a Tesla Model S crashed into a stationary fire truck on a California freeway early Saturday morning, officials said Contra Costa County Fire Protection District.
The Tesla reportedly struck a fire truck parked at an angle with its lights on, blocking lanes on Interstate 680 as an earlier accident on the freeway was still being cleaned up. The driver was pronounced dead at the scene, and a passenger and four firefighters who were in the truck were taken to a hospital, the department said.
The passenger’s condition is unknown and firefighters were treated for minor injuries, according to the Associated Press.
The front end of the car was demolished and had to be cut open to extract those inside, firefighters told the Associated Press. Photos released by the department also show that the fire truck was damaged and towed from the scene.
A highway patrol officer told the AP it was unclear what caused the accident, including whether the driver might have been distracted or intoxicated, or whether the Tesla was using one of the car’s driver assistance programs.
Tesla and the Contra Costa County Fire Protection District did not immediately respond to Insider’s request for comment.
