Twitter's Blue Verification: Who's Really Verified?

Elon Musk’s Twitter statements about Twitter have angered many users and led to concerns about the future of the platform. A new report has revealed that around half of Twitter’s Blue verification service subscribers have less than 1,000 followers. Additionally, nearly 78,059 paying Twitter Blue subscribers have less than 100 users following their account. It is unclear how many of these paying subscribers are currently not paying the platform. Elon Musk recently announced that he will remove all legacy Blue check marks from the platform. Only verified accounts will be allowed to appear in “For You recommendations” starting April 15. Furthermore, it is okay to have verified bot accounts as long as they follow the terms of service and don’t impersonate a human.

A new report has revealed that around half of Twitter’s Blue verification service subscribers have less than 1,000 followers. This comes as the CEO of Twitter has started charging users to obtain the Twitter verification badge. According to the report, there are 2,270 paying Twitter Blue subscribers who have no followers at all. The current total number of paying Twitter Blue subscribers is 444,435. Of those subscribers, around 220,132 users have less than 1,000 followers on the platform. Additionally, nearly 78,059 paying Twitter Blue subscribers have less than 100 users following their account, which is 17.6% of all Twitter Blue subscribers.

It is unclear how many of these paying subscribers are currently not paying the platform. Furthermore, Twitter has not been removing paid verification badges from many users who cancelled their Blue subscriptions since the company announced it would remove the blue verification badge from individual pages. As a result, those users are still marked as “Blue verified” by Twitter and show up in the data. However, only 0.2% of Twitter’s 254 million daily activities are for the users who are paying for Twitter Blue.

Elon Musk, Twitter CEO, recently announced that from April 1, he will remove all legacy Blue check marks. There are approximately 420,000 legacy verified accounts in total. He also stated that only verified accounts will be allowed to appear in “For You recommendations” starting April 15. Additionally, Musk mentioned that it is okay to have verified bot accounts as long as they follow the terms of service and don’t impersonate a human. He later clarified that accounts that a user follows directly will also be included in For You recommendations since the user has explicitly asked for them.

Elon Musk’s recent Twitter statements have angered many users, leading to concerns about the future of the platform. Since Musk took over, Twitter has lost multiple advertisers. (33 words)
