Kamala Harris’ Historic Speech in Ghana Affirms US Commitment to African Development

The US has restated its unwavering commitment to collaborating with Africa at all levels of development, with Vice-President Kamala Harris leading the charge. Speaking to an enthusiastic crowd at the Independence Square in Accra, Ghana’s capital city, as part of her three-nation African tour, Harris extolled the potential, dynamism, and energy of Africa, declaring that what happens in Africa affects the entire world.

Harris highlighted economic empowerment, digital inclusion, democracy, and good governance as key themes in her speech. The trip to Ghana, Tanzania, and Zambia from 29 March to 2 April followed a summit hosted by President Joe Biden in Washington in December, where US leaders and African counterparts met.

Ms. Harris noted that African nations played a critical role in global issues of concern, such as peace and security, and it was, therefore, appropriate for the US to collaborate with the leaders to improve the people’s well-being. She emphasized the long-lasting ties between the US and Africa, adding that the two regions had an intertwined history.

The US has supported Africa in various fields of human endeavor, including education, health, agriculture, security, science, and technology. Harris expressed optimism about Africa’s future, given the continent’s determination and creativity in breaking barriers in science, technology, and innovation.

Harris promised that the US would continue to work with Africa to make inroads in these areas since they were crucial in solving problems that have not yet been identified. “Your determination and creativity will drive the future,” she said.

It is worth noting that Harris’s speech is one of the few historic visits by a US official to Africa during the pandemic.
