72-year-old Congressman Pursues Computer Science Degree

Northern Virginia Congressman Don Beyer has decided to pursue a graduate degree in computer science at George Mason University. At the age of 72, Beyer, who represents Arlington, Alexandria City, Falls Church, and parts of Fairfax County, is taking computer science classes with a focus on machine learning. His goal is to gain expert insights on Capitol Hill as Congress tackles the fast-developing technological issue of artificial intelligence, its applications, and the potential loss of human jobs that could result from the burgeoning field of artificial intelligence. The congressman is a member of the United States Congressional Joint Economic Committee and the House Artificial Intelligence Caucus. The House Artificial Intelligence Caucus has grown to 40 members this year, and Beyer believes that it could reach 100 members by the summer. Beyer’s studies could provide helpful, expert insights on Capitol Hill as Congress deals with the potential negative impacts of artificial intelligence.

Northern Virginia Congressman Don Beyer Pursues Graduate Degree in Computer Science at 72

Northern Virginia Congressman Don Beyer has decided to go back to school and pursue a graduate degree in computer science with a focus on machine learning at George Mason University. Beyer, who represents Arlington, Alexandria City, Falls Church, and parts of Fairfax County, is a 72-year-old part-time student.

Beyer, a 1972 graduate of Williams College in Massachusetts, has always loved learning, and many of his family and friends have graduate degrees. He stated that he is “catching up at the age of 72.” However, his course of study is not easy, and he is currently completing required credits in calculus, multi-variable calculus, and discrete mathematics.

The congressman is a member of the United States Congressional Joint Economic Committee and the House Artificial Intelligence Caucus. The House Artificial Intelligence Caucus had six members last year, but it has grown to 40 members this year, and Beyer believes that it could reach 100 members by the summer. He thinks that the caucus could help Congress determine what regulations are necessary to protect against the potential negative impacts of artificial intelligence.

Congressman Beyer’s studies could be instrumental in providing expert insights on Capitol Hill as Congress deals with the fast-developing technological issue of artificial intelligence, its applications, and the potential loss of human jobs that could arise from the burgeoning field of artificial intelligence.

Beyer hopes to finish his graduate degree in computer science within three years, but in the meantime, he, like many other students who work full-time jobs, is burning the candle at both ends.
