Southern States Focus on Drug Trafficking

Union Home Minister Amit Shah is set to oversee the destruction of 9,298 kg of seized drugs worth Rs 1,235 crore during a southern regional conference on ‘Drug Trafficking and National Security’ in Bengaluru. This drug destruction process is part of the central government’s ‘zero tolerance to drugs’ initiative that aims to destroy 75,000 kg of drugs.

Shah will attend a conference of the five southern states and three Union territories, where the focus will be on preventing drug abuse and curbing trafficking through sea routes. Additionally, the meeting will aim to coordinate state and central drug enforcement agencies to develop strategies that can help in the fight against drug trafficking.

Meanwhile, social activists and intellectuals in Karnataka have written a letter to the Chief Minister, Basavaraj Bommai, calling for the direct payment system to be applied to all garbage vehicle drivers, cleaners, and loaders. In the letter, they referred to the Chief Minister’s previous assurance to abolish the contract system and bring all pourakarmikas under the direct payment system.

Activists and intellectuals in Karnataka have written a letter to the Chief Minister, Basavaraj Bommai, calling for the direct payment system to be applied to all garbage vehicle drivers, cleaners, and loaders. They expressed solidarity with solid waste management workers, who have been protesting for the past 11 days for this demand. In the letter, they referred to the Chief Minister’s previous assurance to abolish the contract system and bring all pourakarmikas under the direct payment system.

Meanwhile, social activist Gireesh Achar has filed a complaint with Lokayukta against officials of the Karnataka revenue and forest department. Achar has accused them of failing to carry out evictions of encroachers from 3,111 acres of forest land in Soraba and Sagar taluks in Shivamogga district. According to his complaint, 3,111 acres of Kan, Sopinabetta, and Jungli forest lands were illegally granted to more than 1,000 people between 2013 and 2017 by L B Chandrashekar, the then tehsildar of Sagar taluk.

In other news, Union Home Minister Amit Shah is set to oversee the destruction of 9,200 kg of seized drugs worth Rs 1,235 crore during his visit to Bengaluru. Shah is expected to visit the Narcotics Control Bureau office in Bengaluru and participate in the drug destruction process.

These developments come as Congress has released the first list of 124 candidates for Karnataka Assembly polls. Additionally, the state government has decided to abolish 4% reservation for minorities, placing them under a general category.
