Meta launches paid verification service for Facebook and Instagram 1

Meta is launching a subscription service that will allow Facebook and Instagram users to get verified for a monthly fee, Chairman and CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced Sunday.

“This week we begin the rollout of Meta Verified – a subscription service that lets you verify your account with a government ID, receive a blue badge, get added identity protection against accounts impersonating you, and get direct access to customer support. ‘ Zuckerberg said in a statement released on Facebook. “This new feature is all about increasing the authenticity and security of our services.”

Meta Verified starts at $11.99/month on web or $14.99/month on iOS. It’s rolling out and testing in Australia and New Zealand this week, with more countries being gradually added.

Meta Platforms’ shares soared 20% at the opening bell earlier this month after the parent company of Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp reported better-than-expected fourth-quarter results and Zuckerberg vowed that 2023 would be a “year of efficiency.” would become. Wall Street hailed Zuckerberg’s pledge to refocus on cost containment this year, promising to cut spending for the year to between $89 billion and $95 billion from $87.66 billion in 2022.

This new paid verification service follows Twitter, which relaunched its Twitter Blue paid verification service in December after a spate of fake “verified” accounts forced them to discontinue the feature. Twitter Blue is $11 per month for iOS and Android subscribers.

Two months after Twitter Blue, the social media site’s blue tier subscription counted just 180,000 paying users in mid-January, a number that accounts for just 0.2% of the social media app’s monthly active users. The 180,000 Blue subscribers represent 62% of Twitter Blue’s total global subscribers, meaning the app has a total of 290,000 subscribers for the premium offering.
