Voting began on March 19, 2023, in the free student union election in Tribhuvan University-affiliated campuses throughout Nepal. However, due to various issues, including padlocking by students, some campuses in Kathmandu Valley and outside the valley will not hold polls on this day. Elections will continue until 4 p.m. in the afternoon, and the Kathmandu Post’s photojournalists captured photos of the voting. The election takes place every two years but has not been held since 2017 due to differences among student unions, which often led to violence and disrupted the elections. Students arrived at polling centres early in the morning to cast their ballots and elect members of the free student unions for a two-year term. Voting has started in other campuses of Kathmandu Valley except for seven campuses, and the election at Mahendra Bahumukhi Campus in Dang has been postponed to March 22.
Voting Underway for Free Student Union Election in Nepal
On March 19, 2023, voting commenced in the free student union election in Tribhuvan University-affiliated campuses throughout Nepal. Students arrived at the polling centres early in the morning to cast their ballots and elect members of the free student unions for a two-year term. Voting began at 8 a.m. and will end at 4 p.m. in the afternoon.
However, various issues, including padlocking by students, have prevented elections from taking place in some campuses inside and outside the Kathmandu Valley. Seven out of the 22 constituent campuses in Kathmandu Valley will not hold polls today. According to Pashupati Adhikari, member secretary of the central monitoring and coordinating committee for free student union polls, voting has begun in other campuses of Kathmandu Valley, except for Amrit Science Campus, Tri-Chandra Campus, Ratna Rajya Laxmi Campus, Bishwo Bhasa Campus, Minbhawan Campus, Ayurveda Campus, and Patan Campus.
Outside the Valley, Janapriya Multiple Campus in Pokhara, Mahendra Morang Campus in Biratnagar, and Nursing College remain padlocked, and the election at Mahendra Bahumukhi Campus in Dang, which also remains padlocked, has been postponed to March 22.
The election takes place every two years, but it has not been held since 2017. That year, voting could only take place in 35 constituent campuses and some 100 community colleges due to differences among student unions, which often led to violence, disrupting the elections in the remaining institutions.
The Kathmandu Post’s photojournalists, Prakash Chandra Timilsena and Elite Joshi, captured photos of the voting, which can be viewed online.
