Evercade cartridges explained: everything you need to know 1

Blaze Entertainment’s handheld Evercade EXP and home console Evercade VS both use bespoke, officially licensed cartridges packed with compilations of old-school arcade gems and the odd assortment of charming indie hits.

Whether you’re playing on Evercade EXP or its Evercade VS counterpart, you’ll get a healthy number of games included with the console, but if you want to expand your retro Evercade collection, you’ll need to buy more cartridges. So it helps that Evercade cartridges work across systems whether you take the EXP or the VS.

But are these Evercade cartridges worth the money? Which publishers is Evercade working with to bring its curated collections to cartridge? How much will they cost you and how many games can you expect on a single cartridge? I’m here to answer all of this and more in our handy explainer. Read on to learn everything you need to know about Evercade cartridges.

Evercade cartridges: price and availability

A single Evercade cartridge typically costs $19.99 / £17.99 / AU$35.99 and is available through Evercade’s official website and from major online retailers such as Amazon. Of course, cartridge availability is dependent on inventory and this price point may vary; I have seen cartridges that are slightly under and over the suggested retail price.

If you’re looking to add some Evercade cartridges to your collection, it’s a good idea to check out several retailers to see if you can get them a little cheaper. Evercade’s website makes this easy as it includes links to all of the retailers that stock its games.

If you’re a fan of that classic chunky cartridge design, you’ll likely be pleased with the aesthetic Evercade has chosen. For reference, they’re a little shorter than a Game Boy cartridge, but a little thicker thanks to the rounded edge. This perfectly matches the Evercade EXP’s slanted design and fits seamlessly into the handheld’s cartridge slot.

Each Evercade cartridge also carries unique branding with clear game and publisher graphics that set them apart. The cartridges aren’t overly flashy, but that’s okay. Aesthetically consistent with the EXP and VS, they are made from a durable plastic that will withstand wear and tear over long periods of use.

What games do Evercade cartridges have?

Evercade cartridge assemblies vary by publisher, but most share some commonalities. Typically, Evercade cartridges contain collections of retro arcade titles. On average, you’ll get six to eight games per cartridge, but there are exceptions.

The Codemasters collection, for example, spans a whopping 17 games, making it one that I would heartily recommend. Especially for all-time classics like Reasonable football And cannon fodder.

It’s not just Codemasters offering its back catalog for play on Evercade devices. You can buy games from Atari, Data East, Interplay, The Bitmap Brothers and many more classic developers.

There are also some nicely curated cartridges with collections like Namco Museum, Intellivision, Commodore 64, Worms and a handful of wonderful indie grab bags. And with more cartridges on the way throughout the year, Evercade doesn’t seem to be slowing down anytime soon.

How many Evercade cartridges are there?

Over 35 Evercade cartridges are currently available from supporting retailers. Combined, this brings the total number of games supported by Evercade to over 300. And with more cartridges on the way, that number will continue to grow.

What types of games are available on Evercade?

While there are far too many games to list here, Evercade offers a wide range of titles, ranging from console and arcade releases to modern 8-bit and 16-bit indie gems. This makes Evercade consoles great for shorter pick-up-and-play sessions or longer immersive sessions, depending on what games you like.

Does Evercade come with games?

Yes. The Evercade EXP comes with 18 Capcom titles preinstalled on the system. Also included in the box is a six-game cartridge from developer Irem. The Evercade VS contains two Technos cartridges from Data East and Arc System Works and offers a total of 18 games.
