Logistics Policy: Revolutionizing India's Economy

The Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT) organised a two-day regional workshop on PM GatiShakti National Master Plan, with the focus on logistics policy. States, including Assam, Manipur, Mizoram, and Tripura, gave presentations on their respective logistics policy, aiming to facilitate wider adoption of the PM GatiShakti National Master Plan and National Logistics Policy across states and Union territories, in the spirit of cooperative federalism. Sumita Dawra, the DPIIT Special Secretary (Logistics), mentioned that such initiatives bring more vigour and build synergy among different stakeholders resulting in mutual learning among states or UTs and central ministries or departments. On the first day, the workshop concentrated on strengthening the North-East corridor with adequate multimodal connectivity to economic centres and gateway ports. During the workshop, the Assam Logistics and Warehousing Policy, 2022, showcased its plan to remodelling the state into a regional logistics hub. The Manipur Integrated Logistics Policy, 2022, aims to enhance Ease of Doing Business by trade facilitation through active stakeholder involvement, while the Mizoram presentation laid down a road map, incorporating local connectivity of various economic zones, formation of a regulatory framework, and the development of an integrated logistics information system. The Tripura policy stressed the creation of aggregation hubs as a centre for storage of perishable and non-perishable commodities, the development of truck terminals and driver resting facilities, and a focus on the thrust sectors like tea, rubber, agro and allied products, healthcare, and education, skill development.

Focus on Logistics Policy at PM GatiShakti Workshop for NE States

The Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT) organized a two-day regional workshop on PM GatiShakti National Master Plan, which concluded on Saturday. More than 140 officials and industry players participated in the workshop, where the focus was on logistics policy.

On the first day, the workshop concentrated on strengthening the North-East corridor with adequate multimodal connectivity to economic centres and gateway ports. On the second day, the theme was National Logistics Policy, and states like Assam, Manipur, Mizoram, and Tripura gave presentations on their respective logistics policy.

Sumita Dawra, the DPIIT Special Secretary (Logistics), noted that such workshops help in the adoption of the PM GatiShakti National Master Plan and National Logistics Policy across states and Union territories, in the spirit of cooperative federalism. These initiatives bring more vigour and build synergy among different stakeholders resulting in mutual learning among states or UTs and central ministries or departments.

Dawra mentioned that the Assam Logistics and Warehousing Policy, 2022, aims at remodelling the state into a regional logistics hub by developing state-of-the-art infrastructure and incentivizing private investments, encouraging sustainability and climate resilience in the region, besides wider inclusive participation in economic activities. This policy will create employment opportunities for approximately 15,000 people in the logistics sector.

The Manipur Integrated Logistics Policy, 2022, showcased its plan to enhance Ease of Doing Business by trade facilitation through active stakeholder involvement, while the Mizoram presentation laid down a road map, incorporating local connectivity of various economic zones, formation of a regulatory framework, and the development of an integrated logistics information system among other matters.
