Second place at the South Fraser Championships sends South Delta to next month’s Grade 9 Boys BC Invitational Championships in South Surrey
The Delta Basketball League champions and runners-up are now targeting the provincial berths while the South Fraser Championships are underway.
The city game culminated with “Super Saturday” on February 11 at Delta Secondary in Ladner, where five champions were crowned. After the season, it moves on to other top Surrey and Richmond schools for a chance to compete in BC Invitational Championships.
Boys’ Class 9 champion South Delta has already earned a spot in the province thanks to a second-place playdown finish from South Fraser. The Sun Devils notched victories over Semiahmoo (67-41) and Elgin Park (61-59) before beating Grandview 54-45 in Thursday’s title game. It is the first time in recent memory that a South Delta boys’ team has qualified for the provincial championships at any age level.
The Grade 9 BC Championships will be jointly hosted by Earl Marriott and Elgin Park in South Surrey from 2nd to 5th March.
At the South Fraser Junior Boys Championships in Richmond, Delta champion Seaquam was eliminated in straight games after losses to Pacific Academy (72-45) and Semiahmoo (64-34). Second-placed Delta Pacers were beaten 71-64 in their play-in game against Lord Tweedsmuir.
The South Fraser Junior Girls Championships begin this Tuesday (February 21) in Richmond.
After a perfect run through the city game, South Delta will look to continue their momentum in the quarter-finals against Surrey’s Holy Cross. Delta runner-up Seaquam will take on Richmond’s Burnett.
Delta hosts the South Fraser Grade 8 Girls Championships, including champion South Delta taking on Steveston-London at 3:30pm at Delta Secondary. City runner-up Seaquam will take on Semiahmoo at Sands Secondary.
