Coyotes beat Blue Jackets 3-2 OT to extend streak 1

TEMPE, Ariz. (AP) — Barrett Hayton scored in overtime, Connor Ingram stopped two breakaways in the closing seconds and the Arizona Coyotes extended their scoring streak to nine games with a 3-2 win over the Columbus Blue Jackets on Sunday night.

Arizona took an early lead with goals from Travis Boyd and Nick Schmaltz in the first half.

Boone Jenner ended Ingram’s scoreless streak after 147 minutes with a goal in the second period. The bottom-placed Blue Jackets upped the pressure in the third period and Patrick Laine equalized with a power play five minutes from time.

Ingram stopped a good chance in overtime after the two breakaways and finished the game with 34 saves. Hayton ended it two minutes after overtime with a pass from Matias Maccelli to give the Coyotes their longest scoring streak (5-0-4) since a 12-game run in 2012.

Elvis Merzlikins stopped 22 shots for Columbus.

The Coyotes bounced back from a four-goal deficit against Los Angeles on Saturday night to earn a point in the 6-5 penalty shootout loss.

Columbus also played Saturday night, beating the West-leading Dallas Stars 4-1.

The Coyotes had plenty of bounce early in the short turn and Boyd scored late in the first period, redirecting a pass from Troy Stecher past Merzlikins.

Schmaltz scored just over two minutes later, hitting Merzlikins on the glove side after a shot from Keller ricocheted off the back boards hard. Schmaltz has eight goals and seven assists in his last 11 games.

Ingram was sharp in the first half, making some tough saves through traffic as the Coyotes killed two penalties. He didn’t stand a chance late in the second when a shot from Boone seemed to put several players in goal, ending his goalless streak after 147 minutes and 8 seconds.

Laine connected it with a pass from Adam Boqvist and fired a shot from the left circle before Ingram could slide over.
