Factor[e] Ventures, a Kenyan-based venture capital firm, has launched a new venture studio, Delta40, to invest in and build technology ventures aimed at tackling climate change and increasing incomes in Africa. The firm invests in early-stage technology companies focused on energy, agriculture, water, and mobility in emerging markets.

Delta40, which will be based in Kenya and operate in Nigeria, will work alongside African and female founders to develop and scale innovative technology-driven ventures in energy, agriculture, and mobility. In addition to providing capital, Delta40 acts as a co-founder, providing fast, iterative product testing, technology brokering, and early-stage commercialization to speed up venture building.

Delta40 has already secured early funding and strategic support from various organizations, including the Autodesk Foundation, the Global Energy Alliance for People and Planet (GEAPP), Wilson Sonisi, and government, private sector, and finance institutions. US Ambassador to Kenya and former CEO of Hewlett-Packard and eBay, Meg Whitman, spoke at the launch event, praising the Delta40 team’s pioneering mix of talent, technology, capital, and hands-on support for African founders and startups.

Delta40 co-founder and managing partner, Lyndsay Holley Handler, said, “By 2100, 40 per cent of the world’s population will live in Africa. This presents an incredible opportunity – and imperative – to invest in entrepreneurs on the ground developing life-changing climate innovations. We are launching the Delta40 Venture Studio to connect African and female founders with the technology, talent, capital and leadership support they need to build successful companies and thrive. Together with our founders, we aim to build a portfolio of transformative ventures across this important continent that improve lives, amplify the entrepreneurial ecosystem and protect the planet for generations to come.”

Morgan DeFoort from Factor[e] Ventures said that although only 3% of global carbon emissions come from Africa, over 60% of African households will be affected by climate change if nothing is done. Delta40 is already building six ventures led by experienced founders and is actively evaluating new founders and venture ideas.

Overall, Delta40 aims to increase incomes and tackle climate change in Africa by investing in technology-driven ventures led by diverse, experienced founders. The venture studio hopes to create a portfolio of transformative ventures that will not only improve lives but also amplify the entrepreneurial ecosystem and protect the planet for future generations.
