The TotalEnergies’ flagship ultra-deepwater oilfield, Egina, located in Nigeria, was awarded the Excellence in Project Integration Award at the 15th International Petroleum Technology Conference held in Bangkok, Thailand. The Egina field is a 200,000 B/D field that came on stream in December 2018 and is operated by TotalEnergies with partners that include CNOOC, SAPETRO, Prime 130, and NNPC Limited. The Egina project, the first deepwater project in Nigeria after the 2010 Nigerian Oil and Gas Industry Development Content Act, created more than 48 million person-hours worked in Nigeria and advanced drilling technologies, leading to greater oil production in ultra-deep waters of 1,400 to 1,700 meters. The 2024 International Petroleum Technology Conference (IPTC) is scheduled to take place in Dhahran, Saudi Arabia, from 12 to 14 February. The IPTC provides a platform for oil and gas professionals to exchange knowledge and present their research findings, and the call for papers is now open for the submission of abstracts on a broad range of topics related to the oil and gas industry.
TotalEnergies’ Egina Field Wins IPTC Excellence in Project Integration Award
TotalEnergies’ Egina field, a flagship ultra-deepwater oilfield located in Nigeria, won the Excellence in Project Integration Award at the 15th International Petroleum Technology Conference (IPTC) held in Bangkok, Thailand, earlier this month. The Egina field was one of the three finalists named for the award in January, and it emerged as the winner after each finalist made a presentation at the conference before the winner was announced during the IPTC opening ceremony.
According to Paul Timitula Brisibe, the General Manager of Preowei Development Packages, who made the company’s presentation at the event, “Partnership and collaboration amongst all stakeholders, technological expertise, and local commitment made Egina a Nigerian project with global footprint.” The Deputy Managing Director of Deepwater, Victor Bandele, also congratulated the company and partners and stated, “It’s indeed a good achievement to the company and our partners, and we must find a way to communicate the great feat to our teams that were fully involved in the project (past/present).”
The award is a testament to the commitment, hard work, and dedication of the TotalEnergies EP Nigeria and TotalEnergies Upstream Nigeria Limited teams, according to the President EP, Nicolas Terraz.
Project Overview
The Egina field is a 200,000 barrels per day (B/D) ultra-deepwater oilfield that came on stream in December 2018 with one of the largest floating production, storage, and offloading vessels in the world. TotalEnergies is the operator of the field, with partners that include CNOOC, SAPETRO, Prime 130, and NNPC Limited.
The Egina project was the first deepwater project in Nigeria after the 2010 Nigerian Oil and Gas Industry Development Content Act. It involved the collaboration of different companies and more than 48 million person-hours worked in Nigeria. The project also facilitated the fabrication of over 60,000 tons of equipment in Nigeria and the advancement of drilling technologies, leading to greater oil production in ultra-deep waters of 1,400 to 1,700 meters.
During the project, reservoir and drilling advancements were implemented, and over 200 Nigerian students were trained, creating opportunities for future careers. Conscious efforts were made to purchase local goods, employ Nigerian citizens, and develop local infrastructure. In addition to contributing to oil production, the Egina project has had a positive impact on the Nigerian economy.

The conference provides a platform for oil and gas professionals to exchange knowledge, present their research findings, and discuss industry challenges and opportunities.
Call for Papers
The call for papers is now open for the submission of abstracts. The IPTC welcomes abstracts on a broad range of topics related to the oil and gas industry, including exploration, production, refining, and transportation. The deadline for submission is yet to be announced.
