GAZIANTEP, Turkey – At least three people were killed and more than 200 injured when a 6.4 magnitude earthquake, followed by a 5.8 magnitude quake, shook southeastern Turkey on Monday, announced the Turkish Minister of the Interior.
It came as emergency teams are still responding to the catastrophic earthquake two weeks ago, which killed nearly 45,000 people in Turkey and Syria and displaced an estimated one million people.
Turkish authorities said Monday’s quake happened around 8 p.m. local time. The February 6 earthquake had a magnitude of 7.8.
Monday’s earthquake, which the US Geological Survey reported as a magnitude 6.3, also rocked Syria, where a relief group reported injuries from falling debris, and Lebanon.
Turkish Interior Minister Suleyman Soylu said at least six people were trapped when several buildings collapsed on Monday. He added that those killed were from the cities of Antakya, Defne and Samandag.
Turkish public broadcaster TRT broadcast live footage of rescue teams operating in a collapsed building in the city of Antakya, one of the cities hardest hit by the February 6 earthquake. He said residents were recovering belongings from their building – damaged in the February 6 earthquake – when it collapsed after the ground shook again on Monday.
Turkish Vice President Fuat Oktay mentioned a minimum of one particular person were rescued from the rubble.
“Do not enter damaged buildings,” Oktay warned in a televised commentary. “Think of your loved ones, your loved ones, your spouses. Think of your nation. Don’t worry about your possessions, they are replaceable.”
