Five people were shot during a Mardi Gras parade on Sunday night and one died, New Orleans police said. One person was arrested at the scene in connection with the gunshots.
Police say it happened along the Krewe of Bacchus parade route.
They said officers on patrol at the parade heard gunshots ring out and found five victims when they arrived at the scene – three men and two women. One of them was a minor, police said.
They were taken to hospital and one of the male victims was pronounced dead.
The others are said to be in stable condition.
NOPD Chief Deputy Hans Ganthier said CBS New Orleans-affiliated WWL-TV officers “were able to quickly apprehend the suspect we believe is responsible for this” and two firearms were recovered.
“It’s really not something we wanted to see,” Ganthier said. “We really wanted it to be a safe Mardi Gras.”
The parade was temporarily suspended but was later allowed to continue, WWL reported.
An eyewitness told WWL there were at least a dozen gunshots and people were falling over trying to get out of the way, leaving everything they had behind.
The eyewitness said there were several skirmishes that officers broke up before the shooting near where the shots took place.
