WATCH: Bo Horvat scores first goal as Islander with Mat Barzal’s sweet fodder 1

Former Vancouver Canucks captain Bo Horvat scored his first goal as a member of the New York Islanders on Tuesday night. The goal came at 5:08 a.m. of the second half in the Islanders’ home game against the Seattle Kraken. Horvat’s goal came from a saucer pass from Coquitlam’s Mat Barzal, which Horvat grounded in the back of the end after a short while.

Horvat’s goal, his 32nd of the season, was the islanders’ fourth goal in the game against the Kraken. Early in the third period, the Islanders were four goals ahead of Seattle thanks to Horvat’s Markstein. Horvat was left pointless on his Islanders debut in Philadelphia last night as he recorded four shots on goal, two goals and two blocks.

The Canucks traded their captain to Long Island last Monday in exchange for Anthony Beauvillier, Aatu Raty and a protected first-round pick for 2023. On Sunday, the Islanders announced they were leaving Horvat for an eight-year extension at an annual average of $8.5 million committed dollars.

Meanwhile, the Canucks have begun removing their former captain’s face from the many banners and other large photographs surrounding Rogers Arena. To this point in his NHL career, Horvat has recorded 202 goals and 219 assists in 622 games.

It took Horvat just 47 games this season to match his high goalscoring tally of 31 in the previous career season, which he had set last season. Since the second half of last season, Horvat has established himself as one of the top scorers in the game. The Canucks drafted Horvat with the ninth overall pick of the 2013 NHL Entry Draft, using the pick they acquired from the Lou Lamoriello-led New Jersey Devils in exchange for goaltender Cory Schneider.

Horvat and the Islanders will welcome the Vancouver Canucks to town on Thursday night, and as Horvat said, it’s going to be an interesting game to say the least.
