Vancouver (19-24-4-2) had lost four straight games and eight of ten before the contest, dropping the Giants to seventh place in the Western Conference. Fourth-seeded Tri-City (25-18-4-1) was coming off a 4-1 loss to hosts Portland Winterhawks after a long bus ride on Saturday but had previously accumulated points in 13 straight games.
Vancouver kept Tri-City’s leading powerplay — 29.6 percent (60 to 203) — in four Man Advantage situations on the scoresheet in the evening and also scored the shorthanded winner, with Trent Semeniuk a Jaden Lipinski feed on a home diverted two against one in the second period.

“I just don’t think we can forget where we’ve been,” said Giants coach Michael Dyck when asked about his group build after defeating Tri-City. “We’ve gone through some tough times here in the last week. We need to go back on Tuesday (at practice) just as we did today with urgency to get the ship back on track. Nothing changes.”

Vancouver Giants vs Victoria Royals
19 o’clock, Save-On Foods Memorial Arena. Radio: AM 650
The Giants were bolstered Sunday with the return of defenseman Carson Haynes (upper body injury), who missed the last three games. Haynes, who turned 20 last week, is a steady, stabilizing influence on Vancouver’s rearguard. He is especially the key to penalty shootouts.
The Giants are without wingers Matthew Edwards (upper body), Colton Langkow (upper body) and Samuel Honzek (lower body).

Honzek is the likely first-round pick in this summer’s NHL draft after an opponent kicked him in the leg while playing with the Slovakians at the World Junior Hockey Championships. He resumed skating this weekend, but Dyck said Sunday he was “not sure about playing next weekend.”

The Giants could also do without winger Kyle Bochek for this home-and-home set against ninth-placed Victoria Royals (14-32-4-1).
Bochek received a major penalty from behind and associated game misconduct penalty for his hit along the side rails at Tri-City center Tyson Greenway in the closing minutes of Sunday’s second period.
All non-combat major penalties are automatically reviewed by the league office and are eligible for an additional discipline.
Bochek, 19, has previously been suspended twice from the league, including a four-game break in October for his strike against Brandon Wheat Kings forward Ben Thornton, which was penalized with a charge major and a game misconduct by the referee. This story would play against him this time.

Bochek’s affair would be even worse if Greenway hadn’t come back to finish Sunday’s game.

The Royals host the Giants at the Save-On-Foods Memorial Center on Friday. The Giants will retaliate on Saturday. Vancouver leads 5-1-0-0 in the 10-game season series.
Vancouver begins the week two points behind sixth-placed Prince George Cougars (21-21-4-0) and seven ahead of eighth-placed Kelowna Rockets (17-26-3-0). Both teams have three games on their hands against the Giants, who have 19 games left in the league. The top eight teams advance to the playoffs.
RE/MAX is the presenting sponsor of Nickelodeon Nights and the games were announced in October. Funds raised will go to support children’s hospitals in western Canada, such as B. BC Children’s. The Giants auctioned off the Ninja Turtle jerseys worn by the game.
