“How The Building Program is Empowering Women and Transforming Communities”
Canadore College is accepting applications for a 23-week carpentry apprenticeship program beginning April 24, 2023. The program is open to low-income women with at least 16 high school credits (usually earned after 10th grade), but a grade 12 diploma is preferred. Also, you must be over 19 years old. Participation in the program is free for those who are accepted.
Interested? An information session will be held at the North Bay Indigenous Friendship Center gym on Friday 10 February from 1pm to 3pm. The center is located at 980 Cassells Street and attending will answer all of your questions, including whether or not you meet all of the admission criteria. Lunch will also be provided.
The application deadline for the program is March 24th. However, the organizers encourage women to apply as soon as possible as places are limited and it is usually quick. If accepted, students will study on the Canadore Commercial Court campus in North Bay, and all costs for tuition, tools, and personal protective equipment will be covered through the Women’s Economic Security Program, courtesy of the Ontario government.
Upon acceptance, “You will be guided and supported in culturally inclusive strategies throughout the apprenticeship and internship,” the college explained, “with ongoing support as you transition into the workplace or into further education.”
This is the fifth year of the program and “we take up to 22 people,” said Marissa Gillies-Linklater, the course project leader. “We’ve gotten quite a lot of interest this year so far,” she said, but there are still a lot of spots open.
