AWS InCommunities Empowers Communities through STEAM Education and More

Saji P.K., Director of Data Center Operations for Asia-Pacific Japan and China at AWS, highlighted the importance of investing in STEAM education, as it promotes innovation and a brighter future for all. Students who engage in science projects learn to ask questions, experiment with ideas, and analyze real-world scenarios, all of which are essential skills for success in the industry.

AWS InCommunities is focused on making a positive difference to communities, particularly in areas where AWS operates globally. The program is centered around four pillars: STEAM Education, Access, and Equity; Local Tech Upskilling, Environmental Stewardship; Employee Engagement. In India, AWS InCommunities was established in 2018 and began implementing long-term community-focused programs in Maharashtra’s Navi Mumbai district, extending into Telangana’s Rangareddy district in 2020.

In Mumbai, AWS InCommunities has worked with over 380 women from Navi Mumbai on a women entrepreneurship program and upskilled young college graduates on cloud computing skills. The program has also developed environment initiatives in the Karnala Birds Sanctuary, including constructing an underpass that provides a safe passage for wild animals, installing informative boards related to tree and bird species, and installing water purifiers in the forest to promote reuse and reduce plastic waste.

STEAM Education for schools and job-seeking adults is a significant focus for AWS InCommunities, with initiatives like the AWS Think Big Spaces program providing students from underserved communities with the infrastructure and guidance required to excel in STEAM subjects early in life. The AWS Think Big Science Carnival held in Navi Mumbai is one such initiative, empowering young students to explore and develop innovative solutions to problems related to agriculture and food safety, health and hygiene, environment conservation, renewable energy, and disaster management.

AWS InCommunities is excited by the passion and energy of these inquisitive students and humbled by the power of their ideas. The program hopes to see more students benefiting from an enriched learning experience through its initiatives, making a positive difference in the communities where AWS operates.
