North York Moors National Park seeks new authority members 1

North York Moors National Park is looking for new members to serve on its Authority, the governing body of the park. The Authority is responsible for managing and conserving the landscape, wildlife and cultural heritage of the park. The call for new members comes as the park looks to strengthen its partnership with local communities, businesses and organizations. The new members will contribute to the development of a new strategy for the National Park and help to ensure that it meets the needs of local communities.

North York Moors National Park needs two new members to join the agency’s board.

The 20-strong organization is responsible for important decisions such as planning and conservation.

Applicants should be “passionate and committed” and will be selected following interviews in March.

The positions are unpaid, but an allowance and expenses are paid. Members are expected to commit to this role two to three days a month.

Jim Bailey, chairman of the North York Moors National Park Authority, said it was a “crucial time” for all protected landscapes.

“National parks are very special places for nature and biodiversity, but they are also vibrant working environments with local communities and a rich cultural heritage.”

In addition to making decisions about building permits, conservation projects and grant programs, members act as ambassadors for the North York Moors.

“As a board we want to make the best possible decisions regarding the management of the National Parks Authority to ensure that the money is well spent and always with great consideration for future generations,” added Mr. Bailey.

Five of the 20 members are appointed by the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA).

A further four are chosen by local councils and the remaining 11 are drawn by local authorities within the North York Moors.

The two new members will be selected by the Secretary of State for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, Thérèsa Coffey.

Mr Bailey said DEFRA is keen to hear from “passionate and committed individuals”, particularly those looking to respond to the challenge of expanding access to the park.

Application deadline is February 20th.
