The Georgetown County School District is launching a new Magnet Schools Assistance Program to bring equity and opportunity to all students. The program has five schools in the Carvers Bay area transitioning to magnet schools with different themes such as creative and performing arts, digital immersion, STREAM, STEAM, and early college and career. Lead teachers will be hired at the five magnet schools to support teachers and curriculum coaches, principals, and assistant principals. The program is funded by a $14.9 million grant from the U.S. Department of Education. To apply, students need only fill out an application on the district’s website, with no academic or GPA requirements, and no tests to pass. If more students apply than there is room for, a lottery system will be used. The application deadline is April 28, and a drop-in information fair will be held on April 3 at the J.B. Beck Administration Building, with representatives from the five schools and district staff on hand to talk to parents and students.

Georgetown County School District’s New Magnet Schools Assistance Program: Bringing Equity and Opportunity to All Students

Georgetown County School District’s new Magnet Schools Assistance Program aims to provide equity and opportunity to all students by giving them a chance to explore their interests and hone their skills. According to Constance May, project director of the program, it will be a wonderful experience for students, helping them discover their strengths and empowering them to succeed in life.

Starting from the next school year, the five schools in the Carvers Bay area will transition to magnet schools, each with its own theme. These include creative and performing arts, digital immersion, STREAM (science, technology, reading, engineering, arts, math), STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts, math), and early college and career. The new themes will be integrated into all classes, enhancing engagement in the classroom.

The district hopes to increase enrollment in these schools but will have to wait and see what comes of the lottery in April. Meanwhile, staff from the five schools have been visiting similar magnet schools in other districts to gather ideas for their own schools.

Lead teachers will be hired at the five magnet schools to support teachers by co-teaching or working on professional development. They will work closely with the curriculum coaches, principals, and assistant principals to ensure a smooth transition.

Most of the physical transformation of the school buildings will take place in the summer, with Brown’s Ferry getting an amphitheater, Carvers Bay Middle getting an outdoor classroom, and all three elementary schools receiving playground enhancements. The new furniture will also be arriving for classrooms.

The Magnet Schools Assistance Program is funded through a five-year, $14.9 million grant from the U.S. Department of Education. Although there may be some challenges in the first year, May reminds everyone that this is a marathon and not a sprint. With time, the program will continue to grow and improve, benefiting students and the community.
