MuchMusic just got its own film to be shown at a major music festival 1

“MuchMusic’s First Feature Film to Debut at Major Music Festival”

The life and times of MuchMusic are highlighted in a film that documents the rich history of the music channel and will premiere at a major music festival in Texas next month.

Appropriately named 299 Queen Street Westthe documentary will delve into the unique, decade-long history of the much-loved MuchMusic brand from the perspective of many VJs (video jockeys) when it premieres to audiences at SXSW in March.

The documentary works to “tell the story of a scrappy television upstart from the VJs’ perspective. At the time, they had no previous experience as television hosts, were given no scripts, no direction, and went live nationally,” reads a website for the film.

The film will premiere next month at the famous SXSW festival in Austin, Texas under the 24 Beats Per Second screening section.

For viewers unfamiliar with The Nation’s Music Station, the synopsis states, “The station’s rise in popularity has intersected with the rise of rap music into the mainstream, the birth of grunge and alternative rock and pop stars sparked teenage hysteria at legendary street studio.”

As per the SXSW schedule 299 Queen Street West will feature features by Rick Campanelli, Sook-Yin Lee, George Stroumboulopoulos and Namugenyi Kiwanuka, among others – no word on whether Ed the Sock attended.

The man behind the film, Sean Menard, also created the 2017 doc The Carter Effectwhich chronicled former Raptors star Vince Carter’s journey as he joined the team in 1998.

For his latest venture, Menard apparently had “unprecedented” access to the MuchMusic archives, where I’m sure I’ve logged many hours of screaming teenagers.
